Immigrant Jail Costs [$70 million/yr in L.A. County to incarcerate illegals]

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The Board of Supervisors today agreed to oppose a federal policy that ends reimbursements to local governments for the costs of jailing individuals whose immigration status is unknown.
.
.
The federal government has partially reimbursed the cost of jailing foreign-born inmates whose immigration status is unknown since 1996. But the Department of Justice now says it will reimburse costs only for inmates verified as illegal immigrants by the Department of Homeland Security.
.
.
Last year, Los Angeles County accounted for more than 8 percent of jailed and undocumented illegal immigrants nationwide and 4 percent of inmates whose immigration status was unknown,
.
.
The county was reimbursed $9.9 million for foreign-born inmates last year, down significantly from the $14 million paid out in 2010. Antonovich estimated the county's cost for such inmates at about $70 million.

$70 million a year, 10% of the nation's incarcerated illegals. L.A. is a sanctuary city (actually THE original sanctuary city) to boot, so those figures could/should be much, much higher.

If L.A. County would actually deport these illegals before they inevitably do something to wind up in jail - rape, molest, murder, drive drunk etc... they could save a lot of money. They look the other way and let these criminals hang around long enough to swell the inmate population, then whine about incarceration costs - boo f'ing hoo.

I wonder how that compares to Sheriff Joe’s tent city expenses.

The jailers in CA are not forthcoming with accurate numbers on illegals. They tend to only report illegals as those with an ICE “hold” on them. Those that will be turned over to ICE when they are finished with their sentence. They don’t include foreign nationals with no immigration hold. They may or may not be illegals. The politicians just don’t want to tell us the truth about the impact of illegals on govt costs.

Or, they could increase taxes on those greedy and evil people who work and earn money ....

Which option do you suppose they will take?

If it’s 70 million in LA County it seems possible that it’s a billion (plus) statewide. Then there’s NV,AZ,CO,TX,IL,NJ,PA and NY,among others.

Just last year, the IRS handed out 4.2 BILLION dollars to illegals.

There’s another option, the one they’ll probably choose:

Releasing them back into the sanctuary city...

I wonder how that compares to Sheriff Joe’s tent city expenses.

Maricopa County jail/prisoner expenses are $250 million/yr for all prisoners...$25K/yr per prisoner (link)

The Los Angeles County jail is the largest jail in the United States, with approximately 171,000 people booked annually and a 2009 daily population close to 19,000. Annual cost per prisoner is $60K. Looking at close to $1.2 billion per year.
