Gov. Bobby Jindal signs 20-week abortion ban into law

BATON ROUGE -- Doctors will be barred from performing abortions 20 weeks after conception under a bill signed into law Monday by Gov. Bobby Jindal.

Senate Bill 766 by Senate President John Alario, R-Westwego, prohibits all abortions after 20 weeks, about 22 weeks on the typical 40-week gestational calendar. The previous state law prohibited the procedure after the fetus was viable.

Alario's bill, which goes into effect Aug. 1, carries fines and imprisonment for any physician that performs an abortion after the cut-off. The bill does allow for abortions performed to protect the life of the pregnant woman.

The bill joins two other abortion measures already signed by Jindal this year. Those measures would increase the waiting period for an abortion from two hours to 24 hours, require that audio of the fetus' heartbeat be played for the woman and require the procedure be performed by a physician.

Jindal also has approved legislation that will allow New Orleans voters to approve or reject higher monthly fees for 911 emergency telephone service. Legislative records show Jindal signed Senate Bill 361 by Sen. J.P. Morrell, D-New Orleans, on Thursday. Morrell's bill goes into effect Aug. 1.

Some FReepers really bust on Bobby Jindal but I have never understood why.

Bobby just keeps getting it done so far as I can see.

Not a lot of flash, no chest thumping, just steady progress in the right direction.

I wish we had fifty governors doing this.

We conservatives (those leaders I mean) need to be lighting fires for the libs to keep spending money to put out. You know, pass bills that are supportive by the majority of Americans (such as this bill) and let the left spend their time and money on stuff like this in the Floridas, Arizonas and Louisianas.

Bush did something similar back in 2002 and 2003

20 weeks is almost 5 months. The fetus at 20 months is fully formed with functioning heart, digestive system, gender organs formed, and a well developed nervous system. It is capable of feeling pain. In 99% of such cases the fetus can survive on it’s own with modern medical care. To abort the fetus at that stage is pre-meditated murder pure and simple. Kudos to Bobby Jindal for actually getting something done in law to prevent such atrocity.

I was present when my twin grandsons where born at 20 weeks and approx two days (according to the ultra sound. They were 12 and 11.5 inches long, and weighted 15 and 17 oz.) They squirmed, smiled, stretched, and turned to their mothers voice. They reached out to each other.
The staff was surprised they were alive and lived blessing us for a short time.
Anyone who says at 20 weeks, this child is not a baby will be punched in the face by me.
Jindal did the right thing, next time maybe he will sign a bill to outlaw abortion all together. It is a start.

And, can talk.

Not far enough....that stupid “for the mother’s health” will totally allow for more abortions. They will say, “she has a cold, better get rid of the baby.” Plus 20 weeks the baby is fully formed....how about no abortion one day ban? Jindal better do better than this. No cheerleading for this. Or how about banning it completely in Louisiana?

Collectivism was woven into American thread at a time. We will pull it out the same way, one thread at a time, or not at all.

Too many FReepers seem to think that politics is some sort of epic fantasy novel where you find the anointed one, hand them the magic sword, and then charge behind them on some grand sweeping crusade to completely remake everything.

In truth, politics is slow and messy (by the design of our genius founders, btw) and incremental. The collectivists have spent over 100 years slowly ensnaring Western man. It will take us decades to excise the collectivist cancer from our society.

Pro(had)-aborts cannot allow there to be ANY restrictions on abortion,
because that opens up the whole issue they’re trying to avoid - that there is something morally wrong about abortion.

Once they allow one foot to step on that path, it invariably leads to “I murdered my child”, and their psyche won’t be able to stand that.

Thanks.

Edit:

Collectivism was woven into American society one thread at a time.

I really think the all-or-nothing approach will be less successful over the long run than an incremental approach.

This new law is an improvement over the previous law. That is good.

We need to get a different set of Supreme Court Justices and then overturn Roe v. Wade in order for a single state to successfully ban abortion.

If Obama gets re-elected then that new, more originalist court will be put off even further. If we get Romney in there, and a GOP Senate majority, then perhaps we will get a chance to make some progress.

All-or-nothing thinking stands in the way of that, though.
