Obama’s attack on Bain “unfair,” Bain was “acting very responsibly,” says …

Update: Don’t forget about Obama’s Bain bundler

Well, what else is former auto industry czar Steve Rattner supposed to say? After all, he quarterbacked the layoffs of tens of thousands of auto-dealer employees in the Obama administration-imposed dealership closures. Moreover, he did so for the exact same reasons Bain had in operating their private-equity turnaround business, which is to make companies and industry stronger through greater efficiency. However, on Morning Joe today, Rattner went a little further, praising Bain’s integrity and reputation:

Former Obama Adviser Criticizes New Obama Ad

“I think the ad is unfair. Mitt Romney made a mistake ever talking about the fact that he created 100,000 jobs. Bain Capital’s responsibility was not to create 100,000 jobs or some other number. It was to create profits for his investors, most of whom were pension funds, endowments and foundations. It did it superbly, acting within the rules and acting very responsibly and was a leading firm,” Ratner said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Monday.

“So I do think to pick out an example of somebody who lost their job unfortunately, this is part of capitalism, this is part of life. And I don’t think there’s anything Bain Capital did that they need to be embarrassed about,” he said.

No, but Team Obama might. Fact-checkers have already noted that Romney had left Bain two years before the steel plant’s closure. Glenn Kessler gave Team Obama two Pinocchios for the same thing last month. Having an Obama adviser throw a red flag on Morning Joe underscores the economic illiteracy and hypocrisy behind this attack even further.

Update: Nice catch by Robert Costa at the Corner, who remembered something I’d forgotten:

Left unmentioned (and blameless) is Jonathan Lavine.

Lavine, according to the Los Angeles Times, is a top Obama bundler and a managing director at Bain Capital. Lavine, who has raised over $100,000 for the president, was at the firm when GST Steel declared bankruptcy. So according to the Obama team’s logic, Romney, who had left Bain, is responsible for GST Steel’s demise, but Lavine, who was there, is not? Expect to hear more about this connection.

More from the LAT article in January:

Obama also picked up at least half a dozen fundraisers from the finance sector, including one managing director of Bain Capital, the private equity firm founded by his possible GOP rival Mitt Romney. Jonathan Lavine, the chief investment officer of Bain affiliate Sankaty Advisors, was also an Obama fundraiser in 2008, but only joined the reelection effort in recent months, raising between $100,000 and $200,000.

That should be good for a few laughs in a debate if Obama has the nerve to raise the issue, eh?

Unfair? "Unfair" sounds like whining, and should never be used in response to an Obama ad.

How about growing a pair and calling it "dishonest," "deliberately misleading," a "desperate lie from a President who once again demonstrates has not even a passing familiarity with something called the truth"?

It's the difference between punching back when a bully attacks vs. running home in tears to tell Mommy.

Republicans need to make clear that they are willing to fight. You don't do that by complaining that something is "unfair."

Exactly right. And the only way you fight back is ‘in kind’ and just AS dirty as your opponent is fighting. That’s the ONLY way you win.

So O has used the:

OBL is Dead Card.

The Gay Marriage Card.

And now the Bain Card?

This is the stuff you bring out in September, not in May. This guy must be really tanking.

That is correct. Republicans too often pull punches and try to play games ("your turn our turn your turn"). It never worked, and their inability to stand up to the democrat machine is what has placed us in the unenviable position we are in now. But even more so today are we fighting against an opponent with no regard for reputation, popular opinion, or political tides -- our opponent today is a pure ideological monster. His recent endorsement of gayness is a good example of this.

If the republicans continue to play games and play nice (a la McCain), and quibble about their principles instead of planting the banner and taking a firm stand, they will lose their base and turn off the swing vote. When will they realize that pandering to the left will never help them, but only hurt them? They need to stake out a position and hold it. Thats the only way they will win.

Regards,

Cope

The way republicans act is what convinces me that they’re all in on the deal. They can’t be that stupid. They lose on purpose. The question is ‘why?’. I think it’s because they’re all cashing in and they’re gonna’ get all they can get to leave their descendents.

What else does he have? Attacking Ann was an exploding cigar, as was the dog story, for obvious reasons. Gay marriage is at best a dud and maybe a trap. OBL is so yesterday, it's a dead battery after the week long anniversary celebration. People are bored with it by now.

Obama needs to create a domestic crisis, which is where the Occupiers come in. They are warming up in the bullpen getting ready to disrupt any and every appearance by republicans, making it look like they are against the eeevil GOP. The whorehouse media will eagerly magnify this picture, focussing on "evil GOP policies" as long as they can.

Oh, and they still can attack his Mormon faith, just like so many freepers.
