I was checking my 8-yr old son's classwork assignment grades. He was so demoralized that he was getting C, D and F on many assignments. I was shocked and delved deeper. Turns out he is assiged a letter grade on these assignments even though he is "making progress" getting up to 70 or even 80 percent of the questions right. Worse, he was assigned an F grade on an assignment because he did not get the meaning for terms "Human Rights" and "Tolerance".
WTF is an 8-yr old supposed to know this shtuff?
Damn....I am seriously considering pulling him out of school and home schooling.

It will only get worse.
The “public school” is BY FAR, the largest, most expensive, most subversive, and most destructive entitlement program in the country.
The “public school” is better understood as the “government school collective”.
It is silly to imagine that you can fix the public schools, because the very concept itself is communist.
Any child that comes out of the government school collective with their moral compass and common sense intact does so in spite of the government school indoctrination, not because of it.
If you want to win the culture war, have lots of children (see my tagline) and homeschool them or form your own school cooperative with your church or synagogue and like-minded friends and relatives.
Nobody loves your children more than you do.
Nobody can teach your children like you can.
Your children would love nothing better than to be taught by you, if you start doing so before they are corrupted by the government school collective.
It is hypocritical for you to submit your children to an authority with whom you fundamentally disagree. And your children will know it.
If you have children, make whatever sacrifices you must to get them out of the public schools.
DO NOT FEED THE BEAST!

Help him write a paper on free speech and tolerance of views that fly in the face of Government. Explain the Declaration of Independence as the source of the founding of America.

Private school is no better. My kids still have to take standardized tests from the government. My 9 year could not wait to tell me that one question was:
“What happens when taxes are cut?” and the answers were:
“Schools lose funding”
“Police and Fire Departments lose funding”
something else he did not remember
and “All of the above”
He told me if the government takes less of our money we can go to McDonalds or the video game store and buy things with OUR money. I was sooooo proud.
dont consider it... DO IT. You can teach your own kid in a shorter amount of time. Better and have fun. we have home schooled our kids all the way through. They start at 9 done by noon. of course they are constantly learning so they are really not out of school... shhh dont tell them.
I don’t know if you have seen The Pioneer Woman on Food network but she homeschools and has a link on her website for fellow homeschoolers. Pretty awesome stuff there.
(Oh and FWIW, in elementary school, my history classes never got past the Civil War. Now, I can tell you all about the Underground Railroad, Uncle Tom’s Cabin and Dred Scott but virtually nothing about anything that happened after that. I bet you can guess where my teacher’s interests were.)

I know a retired public school teacher that is of the opinion that sending a child to public school is a form of child abuse.
My 16 year old daughter is a university sophomore. Homeschooling can seem daunting, but it really isn’t that hard to do. There are many, many resources readily available with the iternet. Public school will indoctrinate and demoralize your son, potentially destroying a promising future. I wish you the best.

I have both friends and relatives in education. Every single one of them despises no child left behind. All that means is kids get shoved up and out, ready or not. Along the way it had dumbed-down the classroom so that they can be shoved up and out. Mix in a healthy dose of socialism via the teachers unions... Public "schools" are worthless.

My friends kid was up from Texas (where he is actually in a very good school). She told me he was having some trouble in his algebra 2 class (mostly in graphing rational functions stuff like (X^2 - x + 6)/(X^2 -4)), and asked if I could help. Though I use fairly high level math all the time, I hadn’t done that particular kind of thing since I was his age 28 years ago. I thought about it for a while, and formulated a plan in my head. The next day, as we got started, I asked him how his teacher explained how to do it. I was entertained with the most complicated explanation I had ever seen. I proceeded to show him the simple steps I had formulated in my head the night before, and one hour later he had fully got it. He was amazed that in one hour I made him fully understand with simple concise rules what his teacher was unable to explain in 3 weeks.

You might be better off demanding the principal teach the value of capitalization, grammar, and punctuation.
If you love your children, then how can you entrust their education to these godless left wing brainwashers? If you aren’t working outside the home, then who better to educate them than you?

I tutored a sophmore in high school recently in mathematics, chemistry and cellular biology. I was utterly appalled at how convoluted the teacher's procedural explanations were in math, and how crazily the subject matter bounced around - yet demanded ridiculous levels of detail - in chemistry and cellular biology. There was simply no way for the student to grasp functional relationships, because they seemed to be deliberately destroyed by the curriculum organization, which demanded rote memorization of thousands of apparently disconnected facts.
It was so extreme, it was evil - teaching, in order to prevent comprehension. ALL of the students had private tutors (no surprise). And this was at a highly accredited high school in a wealthy area. It's just madness.
I was confronted with this bull twenty plus years ago. homeschooling or private school was not an option.
My actions
We all can make a difference one person at a time. And I encourage you to do the same.
NEVER be confrontational. Always be calm when confronting the teachers and administrators. They stop listening and you get branded a crazy forever.
Monitor and review your childrens school work weekly. Never raise your voice or hit your head on the wall. The kids do not understand and it only scares them.
Never talk above their head but always talk to them on their level of understanding
Arm yourself with knowledge regarding the subject matter they are teaching. Learn how THEIR system works. Not the way you think it should work. (remember . . . do not hit your head on the wall. It only hurts you and hard to explain to the neighbors)
Slowly but surely begin objecting to the study material and teaching material in a sane and reasonable manner. Offer solutions . . . calmly
You will NOT see results for a long time.
Many many years later I can look back and smile and say to myself, a difference was made.

Here in WI, there is no way in hell I’d have a kid in a public school. No way. Home school or Christian school only. Public schools are nothing more than socialism factories funded by force using the property tax. What a scam. They’re the mob,taking our money by force, using it to “educate” children, while they all get rich off overburdened taxpayers. Bunch of freakin’ leeches. Be thankful that you’re finding out early enough to give your kid a chance at life. Many of us out here have been SCREAMING for people to give up the granite and the plasma and get their kids out of those institutions. Of course we’re laughed at, since bad schools ONLY exist in ‘other’ neighborhoods.
Do you really think that there is a textbook for social justice for third graders? The curriculum is probably supplied through the union with the help of some community organizing group.

My own daughter, when I was visiting her in college, told me they didn’t allow people to watch Fox news in their house. She still doesn’t understand the irony regarding tolerance.
Tolerance is accepting a meaning for the word tolerance that does not agree with your own meaning...in other words, allowing what you disagree with. Did you find out what answer the teacher was hoping for? Maybe you could volunteer in the classroom a couple of half days a week for awhile and get a broader sense of what is going on there. Public school is no place for a kid these days though.
Pull him out, please. Many people know a lot about online and other kinds of excellent cirrcula (sp?).
The indoctrination will only get worse. You will never, ever regret home schooling and neither will your son.
