can I ask you a question and others on here.

Why do you use these companies?
I mean why not use an external harddrive so your data is private instead of letting a company , a liberal company in this case back your data up and so they can see what you have done or what you like etc?

To me it doesn’t make sense to pay a company to back your files up when all you have to do is back them up yourself and that way no one see what what files you have, especially this left wing company

Geographical separation. If your house is hit by a fire or tornado, it isn't going to matter that all your stuff is on an independent hard drive that was sitting next to your computer.

The main reason for this type of backup is that it is off-site. If your house burns down, or is robbed etc, your main PC and your backups are both lost, unless you move backups off-site regularly, which is a lot of work.

Simple answer: it was easy and Rush recommended it highly. I installed it a couple years ago and have not had to touch it since, but it was there should I need it.

Last night I went to Costco and bought a 2T server backup drive and it is now chewing on my data. I am also going to backup my daughters computer myself from now on. I've had it with these people!

And with your own external hard drive, if your computer fails you, you can recover what you need when you need it. You won’t ever have to see “Site Unavailable Due To Server Maintenance, Please Try Again Later”.

Since I am backing up files for a small network of computers, Carbonite has been a no brainer solution. But, I have other devices in play too. My previous back up solutions had a storage limit and required me to actually insert a disc and sit there and wait for the back up to complete at the end of each week.

Carbonite saved my bacon once, but I had to hire a consultant to get my files back and it took all day. I just renewed for a year, but I’ll let them expire next time.

I’m glad to hear that Lifelock is still good I was thinking of purchasing that.

I don’t use Carbonite but it was on my short list for a few of the PCs I’m responsible for.

1) off-site
2) multiple PCs at different locations
3) 12+ PCs on our home network
4) automated so I don’t have to allocate time
5) tried Microsoft’s network solution and had multiple problems
6) for church it means back-up actually happens even if people “get too busy”
7) support Rush’s sponsors
8) vendor support means friend/family aren’t calling me for help with retrieving files from their back-up

HOWEVER, I would never, never use it for my own personal files. Ever. My files don’t leave my control. Given the current climate, I no longer trust the gov’t won’t usurp yet another right and decide that my private data is their business.

I don’t use the companies, but called them anyway.

Use crashplan.com They have a free option where you back your computer up to a friend or family members home computer so you get "offsite" backup (incase of fire, tornado, burglery, etc). The data is encrypted using blowfish. If you want, you can pay them for space to backup your files on their computers. The tool is easy to use.
Also, Someone posted a replacement for GoToMyPC. I believe they also cancelled on Rush, so they need to be dropped too.
