Rick Santorum backer Foster Friess raised more than a few eyebrows yesterday when he told MSNBCs Andrea Mitchell that, back in his day, they used Bayer aspirin for contraceptions. The gals put it between their knees and it wasnt that costly.
Now as Santorum tries to distance himself from Friess comment the businessman has taken to his blog in order to explain that had been joking, as well as to apologize to anyone who may have been offended:
After listening to the segment tonight, I can understand how I confused people with the way I worded the joke and their taking offense is very understandable. To all those who took my joke as modern day approach I deeply apologize and seek your forgiveness. My wife constantly tells me I need new materialshe understood the joke but didnt like it anywayso I will keep that old one in the past where it belongs.
He also took the opportunity to discuss Santorums policies concerning contraception policies people may have misunderstood thanks to the aspirin kerfuffle:
He publicly stated he would not ban contraception; he has said if he were a member of a state legislature which introduced such a bill, he would vote against it; and he has incurred the wrath of his more conservative friends for voting to fund contraception to fight AIDS in Africa. His 75% favorables include a lot of women who appreciate his clear stance on contraception that they favor. His strong personal convictions on the subject are well-known and he has never attempted to turn his personal preference into public policy unlike the stand President Obama has taken in forcing Catholic institutions to embrace his world view.
why does our side continue to apologize. It was a joke for gods sake. Pisses me off. Im telling you we live in a scary world. I posted something on facbook about michelle and her food war and was in a heated discussion and all of the sudden the post is gone. I swear I am on a list somewhere. Bring it Bam Bam
Oh, dear - gasp! - he made a joke.
The press and a majority of the electorate have no sense of humor; he should have known better....
You should have known this was coming, looks like Republicans will be retreating on yet another front.
Giving Dems ammunition like this is rarely helpful.
Excellent question. When did the Republican Party get taken over by France? Pathetic.
Thats exactly what he did.
What we need is more conservative morons like this to give the enemies of freedom the ammo they need to shoot down our planes.
Honestly, I don’t see how Obama loses in the fall. The only people the GOP can defeat is the GOP.
Scary indeed! Chrissy Matthews and two she-demons from somewhere were absolutely apoplectic about this! 30 seconds is my upper limit before Chrissy makes me puke, but trust me those she-demons were UGLY and EVIL.
How could his comments have been offensive? What kind of bull crap is this? An aspirin behind the knee is very effective birth control. It also stops many types of STDs. Abstinance is much much cheaper than any other form of contraceptive. Hey republicans, stop apologizing for being right and for reminding people that actions have conseqnces! Why do taxpayers have to fun promiscuity among the poor?
Stop apologizing.
Just stop.
Now.

Back in the 70s, my brother bought a book called: “The Official Democrat/Republican Joke Book”. That joke was in there. I think Ann Landers (or maybe her sister, Dear Abby) used it in her column.
Not just fund promiscuity we subsidize it and encourage it.
On another note, I will be sorely disappointed in Santorum if he does distance himself from this guy. There is no need for an apology other than I stepped on the punch line, sorry for a bad delivery.
Never apologize for a joke. Accuse the other side of lacking a sense of humor.
So; Friess: Stupidly “tone deaf” Dems: predictably opportunistic ...and, for the encore; Friess, grabs ankles, apologizes; draws more attention to his mini-faux pas and makes it all ...far worse!
My Prediction: Mr Friess will now become a highly-respected GOP-E political analyst and a major player in the selection of all future GOP-E presidential candidates.
Stupid one-sided condemnation of a NOTHING comment. Sugarland has a song that has the line “....girl, remember what your knees are for.....” A common sentiment not worthy of further discussion in my opinion, regardless of whether this guy is connected to Santorum or not.
My thinking exactly. The republicans (I’m not sure they are “our” side) will apoligize before they’re finished with the statement.
Plus, they won’t even ASK for an apology when the democrats or media insult them. Has any republican condemned Maxine Waters’ screeching?
"Back in the 70s, my brother bought a book called: The Official Democrat/Republican Joke Book. That joke was in there. I think Ann Landers (or maybe her sister, Dear Abby) used it in her column."
Very interesting. I wonder what kind of letters Ann Landers received in response, (if any) back then.
I have vague memories of a sidewalk astronomer posting pictures (on usenet) of his setting up near one.
I’m sorry for the apology
And he didnt even get the joke right:
Q: “What is the Catholic Birth Control Pill?
A: “St. Josephs aspirin. Held between the knees.”
