A woman thought to be the world's last known surviving service member of World War I has died aged 110.

Florence Green, from King's Lynn, Norfolk, served as a mess steward at RAF bases in Marham and Narborough.

She died in her sleep on Saturday night at Briar House care home, King's Lynn. Mrs Green had been due to celebrate her 111th birthday on 19 February.

The world's last known combat veteran of World War I, Briton Claude Choules, died in Australia aged 110 in May 2011.

God bless and rest them all who fought for liberty.

The same is occurring rapidly for the World War II generation, passing at the rate of several thousand a day now.

My father, a combat navy officer vet of the PTO (Pacific Theater of Operation) in World War II passed nine years ago at the age of 79. Not a day passes that I do not miss him.

My Great Uncle Ben survived a gas attack during WWI. After he was discharged, he was considered quite a catch by all the girls because he received a disability pension from the VA or whatever it was called back then.

That is an indication of just how rough times were in the deep South back then.

He was also quite a character.

My father was a pharmacist's mate on a submarine in the PTO. He went on eternal patrol about 10 years ago.

God bless you and your family. My father, WWII veteran of the PTO and career Army, passed away this last Christmas Eve. Greatest man I ever have known. They don’t make ‘em like our dads any longer.

And here in California the godless infidels have refused a simple memorial erected in 1934 atop Sunrise Rock that stood ,was erected, and cared for by Veterans in honor of the dead of all wars until stolen by some misguided common thief apparently in a fit of drunken ? rage.in 2010 All to appease the infidels and enemy to our Country and Constitution.

The world has changed somewhat since February 19, 1901, the day she was born.

On that day, William Mckinley was our president and (When You Were)Sweet Sixteen by the pop star Harry MacDonough was one of the biggest hit records.

In the football season that concluded a few weeks earlier, the University of Southern California Methodists beat arch-rival Occidental College by scoring the game's only touchdown to boost their overall won-lost record versus the Tigers to 2-1-1. Two weeks later, USC played Los Angeles High School to a 0-0 tie and closed out the season with a loss to the Pomona Huns.
