Of course, it also doesn't mean they're not going to get anything. The Daily Caller reports that Komen's donations doubled in the two days after the Planned Parenthood assault began, presumably because lots of people wanted to support its apolitical work against breast cancer but did not want to give money to a group that was subsidizing a group that both performs and advocates for abortion.
If that describes you, you might consider following the advice of our friend Susan Carusi: Give to a local breast cancer support group, "which provides counseling and assistance to women diagnosed with breast cancer. At least this way you know exactly what the money is being spent on."
While our sympathies are with Komen in this whole kerfuffle, we must say that the group has displayed an appalling naiveté in its approach to the matter. It's reminiscent of the last big controversy the group was involved in, which we wrote about in 2009. In that instance, Komen hosted a conference in Alexandria, Egypt, for "international advocates." Komen was sandbagged when Israeli doctors who'd been invited to the event received disinvitations from the Egyptian health minister. The Egyptians backpedaled, but by then it was too late for the Israelis to attend.

In truth, Komen was under no obligation to fund Planned Parenthood. Its decision not to do so was not punitive and did not even appear to be. The episode is reminiscent of George Orwell far more than Joe McCarthy. Komen's actual aim was to extricate itself from the divisive national battle over abortion by severing its connection with a leading combatant.

This author is right. The Susan Komen Foundation should never have gotten involved with Planned Parenthood in the first place. The only logical thing they could do is to stick with its guns, focus exclusively on finding a cure, and refuse any association with any political advocacy groups of any kind.
Many on this forum were bamboozled into making donations to Komen when it was announced that they would stop funding P.P., I and plenty of others suggested caution but were ignored. Wonder how they feel now if they jumped the gun and sent money to Komen?
It was all a big ruse to make liberals increase their donations to P.P. and conservatives to increase theirs to Komen and it worked. Now it’s back to business as usual at both places.
Rather than give them money, then, why not grant money to clinics, hospitals, or organizations with mammogram capabilities to fund mammograms for women who are uninsured and don't have the ability to pay?
I have a very hard time believing that Planned Parenthood is involved in breast cancer research in any meaningful way.
I believe that the Chair of the Komen Foundation is more naive than anything else. Nancy Brinker has no history of electoral involvement, though she was George W. Bush’s Ambassador to Hungary during his first term. If Congress is able to get any legal dirt on Planned Parenthood, any financial support from Komen will be stopped.
The net positive of the whole affair is that now more people know about the connection between Komen and Planned Parenthood. We’ll have to see how that plays out.
It may be that Nancy Brinker was bamboozled by Planned Parenthood.
Then she seems to be easily bamboozled as well as easily bullied. There are far better ways to use the Foundation’s money, or rather their donors’ money, than to turn it over to Planned Parenthood’s greed.
And now, it appears, that Koman has flipped back!
There are far better ways to fight breast cancer than to turn over one's money to the greedy leftist Komen Foundation.
I just hope that The Komen Foundation cuts Planned Parenthood off again and stick with its decision.
Very nice Doug.
