Reagan's Young Lieutenant
American Spectator ^ | Jan 24, 2012 | By JEFFREY LORD

Gingrich a star on Reagan team: Romney "work product" as conservative at issue.

Mitt Romney has raised the issue of Newt Gingrich's "work product."

Wow.

Intended to prod the former Speaker on the issue of his work for Freddie Mac (Gingrich last night released his contract with Freddie), the question, as seems to be a Romney characteristic, has clumsily backfired. It raises an all-too obvious question that is becoming increasingly revealing.

What is Mitt Romney's "work product" for the conservative cause?

The closest Mitt Romney ever got to the Reagan Revolution is apparently because he reads about it 30 years later. And he isn't even reading everything he should. This is the man, remember, who proudly professed when running against Ted Kennedy in 1994:

"I was an independent during the time of Reagan-Bush. I'm not trying to return to Reagan-Bush"

A peculiar stance considering Reagan carried Massachusetts twice in his two presidential landslides. Romney now assures that Newt Gingrich -- who actually had a serious and considerably well-known role working with Reagan -- had little role in it. (By the way, Reagan won over 1, 310, 936 votes and over 51 percent in Massachusetts in his 1984 re-election race, while Romney won his solitary gubernatorial victory in 2002 with 1,091,988 votes and 49.77 percent. Which is to say, Reagan outpolled Romney by over 200,000. In 1980, third party candidate John Anderson drew off 15 percent of Reagan's vote, otherwise, one suspects, Reagan would have trumped Romney then as well.)

I was just going to post the link to this on the thread that was just pulled. I think drudge and the nro have lost their collective minds. The irrational hatred for Gingrich is palpable. And drudge has lost me along with many other Conservatives because of it.

I take it this is not on Drudge?

Anyone would think Gingrich had killed his cat, he is turning himself into the official anti Gingrich internet campaigner.....god only knows why he would rather the complete phoney, liberal Romney.

Great post! Another snip from page 4 -

"Newt Gingrich raised holy hell.

What Dole was proposing was a violation of the Reagan 1980 platform, a gross violation of Reaganomics, and just plain dumb."

Reagan put his arm around the young Georgia Congressman and said in his typically gentle fashion,

"Well, some things you're just going to have to do after I'm gone."

hey FOX how about reporting this instead of knocking Newt all the time.
I’ve had FOX on now for about 15 mins and they have had two hit pieces against Newt and then had their two talking heads on Tantaros and Williams.

They ever had an headline saying Newt was no fan of the Gipper and then went on to make fun of Newt for saying about a base on the mooon.

You should see FOX, holy crap they are hitting Newt from every side, they had a banner saying Newt is no fan of the gipper and then made fun of him and then went on about media bias.

Media bias , WOW FOX has been hitting Newt since he won SC and maybe before. They’re so desperate for their north east elitist socially liberal guy to win they will say and do anything now just like Romney.

I can remember when Gingrich was the second most vilified (by the left) man in the country, second only to Reagan. The left hated both with a passion. That speaks reams about the high regard in which I hold Gingrich.

Many of today's young Marxists aren't old enough to remember just how much their daddies and mommies hated him. That, in itself, is reason enough to support him.

Great article... points very well made. More and more, the thought of Romney is disgusting.

At a minimum, I hope Newt and Rick hang in there to make it a brokered convention — and then my hopes will go with Paul Ryan.

I would argue that what you percieve as hate is actually a manifestation of fear.

Newt wrote and then implemented the Contract with America. He ended decades of Democrat control. He enunciated ideas that trashed the status quo. The sudden end to power brought extreme anger to some and placid resignation to others.

He was politically murdered. He has risen. His wrath if elected will be terrible on the remaining murderers.

The fear is manifest again
