Rick Santorum surged at the last minute to give Mitt Romney a real run for his money in Tuesday's Iowa caucuses, is less green than his rival, and decidedly nuttier when it comes to climate change. But let's not split hairs here. Both men will staunchly defend fossil fuels, and neither is likely to do much of anything to fight global warming.
Mitt Romney has expressed qualified concern about climate change over the years, and then vacillated about how much of it is human-caused and whether we should try to do anything about it.
No wobbling of that sort from Santorum -- he's an out-and-out denier. "There is no such thing as global warming," he told a smiling Glenn Beck on Fox News in June 2011. That same month, he told Rush Limbaugh that climate change is a liberal conspiracy: "It's just an excuse for more government control of your life and I've never been for any scheme or even accepted the junk science behind the whole narrative."
Santorum made a point of announcing his presidential candidacy this spring near the coalfields where his grandfather worked -- so that's your first clue as to how he feels about the dirtiest of all fossil fuels. During his 16 years as a member of Congress and then senator from Pennsylvania, Santorum was a big coal booster -- and he's continued to play that role even after his defeat in a 2006 Senate race.
In 2003, he supported a Bush EPA rule that allowed dirty, old coal-fired power plants, refineries, and industrial facilities to modernize without adding new pollution controls. Just this week, he bashed the Obama EPA for restricting mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants, ignoring the fact the new rules will save thousands of lives and prevent developmental problems, learning disabilities,

Newt Promotes Dust Rule Myth To Attack EPA Radicals. I cant make these things up, Gingrich concluded."... "At a town hall in Atlantic, Iowa, Gingrich gave a reason for his present denial of man-made global warming. Im an amateur paleontologist, Gingrich said..."
"Limbaugh skewered Gingrich and the babe named Hayhoe.-Newt Kills Climate Science Chapter.
Ron Paul hates energy subsidies, doubts climate change, and loves riding his bike.
"Paul was not a fan of the cap-and-trade bill that passed the House in 2009; he warned that it would "put another nail in the economys coffin." In May 2009, Paul signed the No Climate Tax Pledge" promoted by the Koch brothers' group Americans for Prosperity."
Romney: "Man-made global warming and cap and trade and so forth - I actually had in Massachusetts a consortium of states that came together with a cap and trade program. It was called the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. And all the governors, Governor Pataki and so forth, signed it. I refused to sign. I do not believe in a cap and trade program"..."By the way, they do not call it America warming, they call it global warming. So the idea of America spending massive amounts, trillions of dollars to somehow stop global warming is not a great idea. It loses jobs.."
Michele Bachmann: "Carbon dioxide nothing to fear because it is a natural byproduct of nature and calls it manufactured science.
Rick Perry: " insists climate change an unproven theory created by a substantial number of scientists who have manipulated data so that they will have dollars rolling into their projects.
Newt, Paul, Bachmann and Perry also appear to like dirty air. Obama had stated: "...youve got their plan, which is, lets have dirtier air, dirtier water, less people with health insurance".
But Huntsman Jr., recently wrote on Twitter: I believe in evolution and trust scientists on global warming. Call me crazy. He joined Arnold Schwarzenegger, then the governor of California, in creating the Western Climate Initiative.
Can't wait to hear the Mittsters' take on this one.
An endorsement. Good news. I hope Romney is just cautious,he is very wary of self inflicted wounds. I like that about him.
Less target-rich for the media hoard.
The fear is, does the lack of clarity mean an Exhale Tax?
Heavy breathers would be in a higher bracket.
In court, presenting the evidence.
Here your honor, the defendant is clearly lying down, motionless, not exceeding his CO2 quota at the time the IRS claims he was out jogging.
“Climate change” has been occurring for millions of years. Only a braindead moron with nothing to do would decide to try to “fight” it. Sorry Lisa. You’re a moron.
HELL YES!!
One MORE reason to really like Santorum.. as if I really needed any more.
Fight climate change?
That debate is over. It’s a socialist/marxist hoax.
Obama is a gross polluter, he burns money.
And it really doesn’t matter if it WAS all perfectly true.
Yes, by God, I would thwart any attempt to shackle liberty over “environmentalism” even if it meant “allowing” untoward things to happen.
Still stuck on global warmism — the difference between Rat and GOP on “clean air” would be like tweedledee vs. tweedledum if it weren’t for that.
Vote for Newt...he loves him some kooky climate science...right kerry and pelosi
Santorum’s a late bloomer in this race, but he looks to be a doozie.
But Gingrich is good news for the climate change fight. He’s been an ardent warrior since before Gore got in on it. Check out the 1989 bill he cosponsored with Pelosi.
but but but they left think it is true even though it has been proven that the e-mails the research etc has been fabricated.
ARF
Gingrich had a passionate fling with global warmism a few years ago. Now he’s on the outs from what I hear. I don’t see this as an issue with Gingrich now.
Please add my name to those who believe the climate folks are simply intestinal contents.
Santorum is for ethanol subsidies and so we must consider him to be on the side of the climate change folks.
