"The illegals I met last night."
Self | 1/1/2012 | Bern Pearson

Posted on 01/01/2012 8:10:22 AM PST by Gen.Blather

I met some illegal Mexicans last night at a party. Several years ago I stayed with a couple of wonderful Mexican families in the Baja below California. These were well-off people. The homes, on average were beautifully tiled and some of them had mahogany inlaid walls, bookshelves and cabinetry that would cost a hundred-thousand dollars here. So, I’m guessing if they aren’t rich they’re very comfortable. The elderly not as well-off grandfather, while living in Mexico was receiving Social Security from the United States and owned a rent-free apartment in California which he used as his address to receive several forms of assistance checks from Californian agencies. He visited the apartment once a week to re-arrange things and make it looked lived in. He had a car, a Toyota Corolla that looked quite nice and had working air-conditioning. I gathered it was supplied as some form of assistance and he generally left it in California at the apartment. The apartment was about 1100 square feet and very livable. The grandfather told me most of entire complex, easily a 1000 units, were like him, on Californian assistance, but actually living in Mexico.

At the party were a couple of teenage boys from this family. Very nice kids. I’d be proud to have them as my own; diligent, hard working, trouble-free and much more adult than you’d expect from that age. They told me that they’d decided to go to high school in California instead of Mexico. They said that the (California) government gave them an apartment and they travel back to Mexico on the weekends. (I don’t know if they’re staying alone or if a family member is staying with them, but if I had to guess, they came alone.)

When I posted information on this family last time, Freepers angrily asked why I hadn’t reported them. Firstly, I was a well-treated guest. Secondly, this must be obvious to the casual observer. Even if I knew who to report it to in California, which I don’t, it is obvious that this is how it’s done. These people are only taking advantage of “benefits” put there for them. Not to avail themselves of these benefits would be like deciding not to take candy freely offered to you.

Morning! We have a large congregation in a small facility. This results in holding “Sunday School” - officially known as “Faith Formation” - on Sundays, Mondays, and Wednesdays.

Brain-sucker or not, a shot or two of caffeine and I’ll be good as new.

Ana received a fish tank for her last birthday. 10gal. We got a 3 guppies and an algae eater.

We lost the first algae eater. It just plain old disappeared from the tank. It didn't turn up in the filter and the tank has a top cover so we are pretty sure that Belle the Cat didn't get it.

Then we lost "Blackie" the guppy. Same thing. There one day. Gone the next.

Angie ended up floating at the bottom of the tank upside down just a couple weeks ago.

Last survivor was Rainbow. He disappeared yesterday.

Tank is now apparently empty. No idea why they died/slipped sideways in time. Ph is good in the tank and we were feeding them the recommended food from the pet store. Tank was cleaned periodically and the filter was changed weekly.

As for Betta fish... Have you been changing the water in the tank frequently? Most Betta tanks don't have an aireator or filter. You need to change a certain amount of water, about a 1/3, every week to keep enough oxygen in the water for it to breath. It also help remove ammonia from waste products/urea.

Fish are pretty to look at, but I think it takes a special knack to keep them alive.

Properly used extraneous data can removed such as what the lady in Mc Donald’s said her cousins named their cat twenty years ago.

Be careful how you edit your memory. We can draw all kinds of associations from apparently disconnected data. Sure, you might forget that cats name finally... But you might also lose the connection to the events later on in that day that you might otherwise wish to recall.

The last betta I had (Pugsley) died at my sister’s house. I had let her take him because it was during the month that I was caring for the Old Dowager, and instead of leaving him alone in his little 2.5 gallon tank, she added two fiddler crabs and three tetras.

It was just too much stress for the little guy and he died. I was really upset over it, because I warned them not to add any fish but perhaps an algae eater.

Go figure. She had her 61st birthday on the 13th. Old enough to follow instructions.

Re: fish. Do you have any plants in his tank? I had a betta named Tsunami, and he kicked off because of a philodendron or something they put in is environment. The giver of the original fish gave me a new one who turned out to be extremely compatible with a snail (nuzzled him, wrapped his little fishy body around him) and they actually coexisted for a year or two before the snail succumbed.

Not according to the old song.

http://library.umkc.edu/spec-col/ww2/warnews/mairzy.htm

It was a “silly song” in WWII, but has now been relegated to a “children’s song.”

We’ve kept bettas for up to five years, but sometimes they just up and die.

Was the original by Bing Crosby?

See? The Knack. Some folks have it, some don't.

Guppies and Bettas are supposed to be the easiest fish to take care of. Maybe we should have our well water tested again...

OTOH, our other animals are happy and healthy. 2-legs and 4-legs alike. ;-)
