Newt Gingrich, whose GOP competitors accuse him of being soft on illegal immigration, pledged Thursday, if elected president, to build a double fence along the Mexican border during his first days in the White House.
We havent been able to build a fence on the border because we have not been a serious country, the former House speaker said at an event in Iowa, before he signed his name to the pledge sponsored by the activist group Americans for Securing the Border.
Gingrich has maintained that the border needs securing but has also suggested that some of the 11 million illegal immigrants living in the U.S. be permitted to stay in the U.S. legally. Some of his competition, including Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, has called that policy amnesty.
Bachmann was the first candidate, and is the only other 2012 contender to sign the pledge.
The candidates pledge to support and speedily expedite the construction of a date-certain, secure multi-layered fence (fence locations to be specified

For Newt it’s to keep the illegals IN the country. LOL
To keep aliens IN!
When newts lips are moving he is either eating or lying, he does nothing halfway.
I’m not buying it. He’s still a pro-amnesty RINO.
Newt’s policy on dealing with illegals is the best one I have heard. It is outlined on his site and well worth the read for anyone interested.
BTW..what is Bachmanns plan on deporting millions of illegals? or any other candidates plan on how this feat would be accomplished other than get rid of the “magnets” which Newt also supports
I see your denial continues. No matter what Newt does it will be wrong in your book. You are becoming a ridiculous caricature of yourself. I do note that Newt has signed the pledge and Cain hasn’t. Wanna bet what happens first - Cain signs a pledge to build a fence or drops out of the race? Actually, I’ll bet you come up with a reason why building a fence is a horrible idea. It has to be if Newt is for it, right? Yeah, until Cain says “good idea, Newt. Can I borrow your pen?”
ENDING THE DISHONESTY: THE WAY FORWARD ON BORDER CONTROL AND PATRIOTIC IMMIGRATION by Newt Gingrich (April 26, 2006)
a fence? why? He’ll keep the gates wide open.
How about bringing the troops back home and lining them up on the border too !!! Why can’t that be in the pledge?
Just build the damn fence..
Isn’t that what his Rino buddy McCain said?
You are not planning on voting anyway. That makes your opinion about as relevant as a pet rock.
...Because apparently his positions on “legalization” can somehow be covered up by how he sugar coats it and pledges he signs? I mock it because it’s so transparent. He’s kissing up to us while at the same time holding a position that is utterly contradictory and unacceptable.
How about instead of trolling me around the forum, you tell me why we need to legalize these people to begin with? Why not ENFORCE the law, when we know that by doing this simple thing, illegals deport themselves? Why are we rewarding illegal behavior? And why do you believe that, somehow, only the illegals who have committed minor identity fraud and have been working for 25 years will be the only ones to get “legalized”?
False. You haven't given the matter enough thought.
I'll vote. But it won't be for a pro-amnesty RINO like Newt.
And a welcome mat rolled out.
Gigrich only signed the pledge, he did not write it, but should I take this to mean you're a Ron Paul supporter?
I’m all for ENFORCING the current laws. I’m also for CLOSING the border. Are you? I’m for building a fence and whatever other measures we need to take. Heck, mobilize the National Guard, increase the Border Patrol, etc. Are you? Oh, wait, those are Newt’s ideas. They must be bad ideas...for some reason.
Take a gander at how long this person has been here-Nov 2011.
Lots of plants like this on this site lately.
I believe you said that if Cain did not win the nomination, which he won't, you were going to write in Sarah Palin. This is equivalent to not voting, which is mathmatically identical to voting for Barak Obama. There are two explanations for this: Either you are an idiot for thinking that announcing a principled stand on an anonymous web forum is relevant, or you are a pro-Obama troll. I don't believe you are actually advocating for Obama.
Newt on immigration
1. Control the border
Round-the-clock drone flights to monitor activity, multi-layer, strategic fencing in urban areas, and vastly improved communication between state and federal authorities.
(So they can ground the drones whenever they want to)
2. Create a 21st Century Visa Program
A biometric, tamper-proof card.
(let everyone in)
3. In-source the best brains in the world
Allow easier transition from an F (student) visa to an H1-B (high-skill) visa.
Allow qualified foreign students to transition immediately into the American workforce.
(Make it easier for foreign students to compete against Americans for jobs and keep wages down)
4. Allow foreigners, who want to spend money, invest and create jobs in America to do so.
(What he is saying here is to do away with the $1 million minimum investment required for an EB-5 program that allows foreigners to move here. Open business based on the foreigners skill to raise American capital, as long as he employees people for 10 years)
More consular staff and a video interview program to create more tourism jobs.
(Newt points out that we loose millions of tourist a year do to illegal immigration)
(Make it easier for the rich to retire in America)
5. There has to be a legal quest worker program, but its management must be outsourced to a sophisticated manager of anti-fraud systems, such as American Express, Visa, or Mastercard.
(Replace E-Verify for guest workers and pay corporations for providing biometric cards)
6. Create a path to earned legality for some of the millions of people who are here outside the law.
(Oh, there are only 8 to 12 million illegal aliens)
A citizens review in individual communities to determine who will continue on this path to legality, and who will be sent home.
(to insure that communities remain segregated)
those here outside the law will be granted Temporary Legal Status
(All of them, I repeat, All of them. Every illegal aliens will receive temporary legal status)
must be able to prove that they can independently pay for private health insurance
proficiency in English within a certain number of years
(Is he talking about those that have already been here 25 years? My neighbor wouldnt qualify)
pay a penalty of at least $5,000
(Each of their kids cost the taxpayer approximately $130,000 for kindergarten thru 12th grade)
prove on a regular basis that they can support themselves
7. Deportation of criminals and gang members should be efficient and fast.
(Nothing about sanctuary cities)
8. Ensure that every new citizen and every young American learn American history and the key principles of American Exceptionalism.
9. English must be the official language of government.
10. Young non-citizens who came to the United States outside the law should have the same right to join the military and earn citizenship.
there will not be an option to petition for legal status and citizenship for their parents
Vote for the most conservative in the primaries and the Republican in the general.
If that is all we do, Obama will be gone in 2012.
I won't vote for a pro-amnesty liberal POS. You will. Good for you.
Has nothing to do with my point. I hope we are beyond disputing the idea that Gingrich wants to seal the border.
Illegal Immigrants Leaving Arizona Over New Law
Gingrich and I agree that SOME illegals will leave when we enforce the laws. That's why he plans to do so. But, again, this was not my point.
Alabama reaps huge rewards from immigration enforcement bill.
See my previous point.
After we seal the borders and enforce the laws, perhaps as many as 10mm illegals will still chose to remain in the country outside the laws. Gingrich is the only candidate with a plan to address this. Actually, Gingrich is the only candidate who even HAS a comprehensive immigration plan.
Anything less than requiring people who are working here illegally to return home to apply for a worker visa is amnesty.
Now he says it's 'inhumane' to for them to leave.
Be it Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich, they flip-flop and say anything they think they need to say to fool the foolish. I'm not fooled.
You forgot the part about Amnesty.
The only reason I even know who you are is because you troll every Gingrich thread with the same lies. And I do not attack, I make observations. For instance, writing in Sarah Palin when she isn't running is the same thing as voting for Obama. I don't know what to call that other than stupid.
Lies? Name one lie I have ever posted about your pro-amnesty POS candidate.
WOW!. I see all the David Axel rod minions are out in full force tonight. David must be grinning from ear to ear as his plan is working to perfection.
The question itself contains a lie. How am I supposed to take you seriously?
Or treat you with the respect you so desperately crave for that matter.
Would Newt cave the first time a marxist federal judge “stays” the fence building for whatever reason?
By his own definition, Newt is for amnesty. You may not like that, you may deny it. But your denials won't change the fact that by his own definition Newt Gingrich is for amnesty.
I forgot which candidate is running on the Andrew Jackson "I promise to disregard the judiciary and do whatever I feel like" platform. Which one is it again? I'm pretty sure Old Hickory is dead, so it can't be him.
You forgot to mention the $5000 penalty.
Why, isn't he the historic jackass perpetually honored by the RAT mascot?
I am not for a fence. personally i believe its going to cost alot of money we don’t have and the mexicans will just figure out a way through it.
why not just enforce the laws. quite giving them all the freebies and watch them flood back to mexico.
You have a deal!
Advocates of amnesty should not be taken seriously if they claim to be also in favor of tougher border control.
Make it impossible for them to work or derive sustenance here and they will self deport. Scorched earth for the illegals, this is war and we need to fight to win. Anything less is surrender to them and the eventual death of the American Republic, or I suppose you have stats to prove they are assimilating and becoming the long promised "new conservative base", we`ve been told of by the pro-amnesty crowd?
And while we`re at it, try giving 10% of the fines to anyone who snitches on the employer who is using illegals. I know I`ll drop dime in a heartbeat for 10% of the fines, I`d impose, per illegal!
Speaking of fences, how’s that fence working out there in San Diego?
Do you really think that making them legal, but not giving them an option for citizenship will stand? Even if the Democrats went along initially, it would not be long before cries about ‘second class (non) citizens’ were being made. Those in support of legalization, but not a path to citizenship would be the new racists, the new bigots, the new haters of Hispanics.
And Newt would almost certainly cave to this sort of name calling. Just look at his disgraceful and shameful betrayal on racial preferences back in the 90s. He once talked tough ending racial preferences, but once he attained the position and power to do something about it, he caved. He could have got a strong and popular anti-preferences bill passed and made it hard for Clinton to veto it, but he decided opposing preferences (and defending the interest of poor-middle class whites) was not worth it. He decided it didn’t fit the image of a modern GOP (i.e. one where he didn’t get called nasty names) he was trying to build.
So yeah, I think the chance that a President Gingrich would change his mind, and decide to grant a path to citizenship for all the red card holders to be about 99%. And then of course the vast majority of those that do go on to become citizens and vote will vote Democratic. And the GOP’s demographic destruction will happen that much sooner.
