It remains a foregone conclusion that Mitt Romney is going to be the Republican Presidential nominee. The only problem is, the polls suggest something else, and there is no evidence to suggest any degree of momentum or support rallying the former Massachusetts governor.
What the polls show, increasingly, is that Newt Gingrich is solidifying his position as the anti-Romney, and in the last week, 3 national polls have come out showing that the former Georgia Congressman and Speaker of the House holds a 2-5 point lead in national Republican primary polls.
More specifically though, Gingrich is leading in a couple of Iowa polls, and in at least one New Hampshire poll has polled within a couple of points of Romney.
To be sure, most of the New Hampshire data shows Romney with a substantial lead, but New Hampshire would be the only state where Romney enjoys anything approaching a comfortable margin. And indeed, if the Iowa numbers which show Gingrich in the lead were to hold true on Caucus day, January 3rd, almost certainly it would provide momentum for Gingrich that would make New Hampshire competitive.
The South Carolina surveys show a commanding 14-15 point lead for Gingrich, and Florida is close to a statistical tie between Romney and Gingrich.
Moreover, Gingrich has recently positioned himself as a Tea Party conservative, and hence the alternative to Romney. But also, Gingrich is a fairly original thinker. He is somebody who improbably enough might even be able to get back toward the center on at least some issues in a general election against President Obama.
By speaking about the urgency of immigration reform, Gingrich took a position in the debate Tuesday night which can only benefit him going forward, should he be the nominee, recognizing the absurdity

I wrote N. Leroy Gingrich off in 1998.
Let's see who get's Rubio's endorsement. Whatever you may think of Newt's position on immigration, he knew exactly what he was doing politically.
That said, this is bound to become another "bash Newt and the couch he rode in" on thread.
I don’t have any intent of supporting a typical GOP go along, get alonger.
This is war, and Gingrich is a towel thrower.
Amnewty
Then let's get started and not waste anymore time. LOL!
Newt is also enemy of conservatives.
He supported Dede in ny, serious adulterer, global warming nut, individual ocare mandate supporter and amnesty fanatic.
His judgement and core beliefs are grave danger to america.
There is buzz in Washington that Palin may endorse Gingrich as soon as next week. From sea to shining sea the night will be illuminated with the light from FReepers spontaneously combusting when that happens. Should be fun to watch. Who else is she going to endorse you dumbasses?
If Doug Schoen knew anything he wouldn’t be a democrat,..
The question is; What else does he DON’T know?..
So far, he’s winning my vote. I am still winnable by any but one. Killing babies kind of does it for me.
It’s only 2011, and I’ve already written him off.
They aren’t getting it. They (the anti-neuters) think the rest of the country thinks like they do, and that Newt jumped the shark, but they don’t realize they are the exception. Gingrich was actually getting good press at CNN. Watch their corks explode when Newt’s poll numbers actually climb from this.
The entire time Cain was at the top, the buzz was Palin was going to endorse him. It was the same for Bachman and for Perry. I wouldn’t count on the buzz.
To quote a respected gentleman on Spanish heritage:
"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
“Moreover, Gingrich has recently positioned himself as a Tea Party conservative”
This sentence is laughable. Newt has virtually nothing in common with real conservatism.
Well, there you go. Poor Sarah will be permanently consigned to the FR RINO Hall o'Fame. (Like she's worried about that.) But in my opinion, I don't think she could do a greater service to her country than to make that endorsement.
Should be fun to watch, indeed.
What a whopper, newt is no t party conservative, newt is a big government politician, he has faith in only one thing, whoever is paying him makes the rules.
Personally I think the anti-neuters are even the exception on FR. A very vocal minority, but a probably a minority nonetheless. Not every one is as willing as you and I and a few others to pull on the old asbestos underwear and dare to suggest that Newt is starting to make more sense than everyone else.
Me, too !
Romney would make for a GREAT running mate for 0bama.
