Rep. James Clyburn (D‑S.C.) said Thursday that Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain's reference to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) as "Princess Nancy" was "disrespectful" and "unbecoming."
During Wednesday's CNBC debate Cain said Pelosi, who in the last Congress served as House Speaker, had held up a healthcare bill that should have been passed.
"Princess Nancy sent it to committee and it stayed there. It never came out. H.R. ... 3,000 allows the decision to be with the doctors and the patients, not with the bureaucrats in Washington, D.C.," said Cain.
Cain was discussing his ideas for reforming the healthcare system in the United States.
"That kind of boorishness that we see on the part of Mr. Cain plays into a narrative that's been out here now for the last two weeks," said Clyburn on MSNBC's "Andrea Mitchell Reports."
"He ought to be very, very careful how he reacts to or treats women going forward and that was a disrespectful comment about one of the outstanding women in our great country," added Clyburn.
Cain's campaign has been mired in controversy since reports of sexual harassment allegations began to surface last week. The GOP hopeful again denied the accusations during last night's debate, saying they are "unfounded."
Clyburn praised Pelosi, saying she "earned" her way into the Speakership.
"I believe for him to denigrate her and her position that way is just unbecoming of a Southern gentleman. ... Us Southern gentlemen just don't act that way," Clyburn said.
Clyburn grew up in South Carolina, attended college there and has represented the state in the House of Representatives since 1993. Cain was raised and educated in Atlanta.

Well, Rep. Clyburn, are false accusations of Tea Party racism NOT unbecoming a Southern gentlement?
How would Clyburn know what a Southern Gentleman would think.
Trash is trash no matter what office they con their way into.
I suppose he could say “Nancy, honey child.” (Duck’n & runn’n)
Hey! He didn’t call her a Lying Scumbag Whore, did he?
He didn’t call her a Sleazy Two-Bit Slut, did he?
(He could have, to massive applause. But he didn’t. I think he was the PERFECT gentleman, given who he was referring to.)
Bingo. He made his point lol!!!
Clyburn’s a Clymer.
The comment wasn’t aimed at “women” - it was aimed at a “woman” (I use the term loosely)...Nancy Pelosi.
“Nazi Pelozi... bless her heart.”
Disrespectful? To whom?
That joke of an ex-Speaker of the House? The walking fruitcake advertisement for why San Fransicco should be buldozed into the Pacific Ocean? Someone was disrespectful to her?
How would he even know?
I thought is was very funny. She thinks she is royalty, he was just acknowledging that fact.
This is pretty funny. Are they seriously trying to pick that remark apart? Is this all they have?
This is getting funny.
Why is ‘princess’ denigrating? It describes her attitude to a tee.
With all that booze on her private jet and other goodies we paid for when she was speaker she is more like Queen Nancy.
gentlement=gentleman
sheesh.
“That kind of boorishness that we see on the part of Mr. Cain plays into a narrative that’s been out here now for the last two weeks”
Ironic reference to royal titles is tantamount to (implied) rape. Or sexual assualt. Or just non-overtly sexual harassment. Depends on which “narrative” he’s talking about?
By the way, does anyone else suddenly feel like we’re living in a distorted hall of mirrors world when reflecting on how the most noteworthy events are the ones that fit the narrative spun by the news on previous events fitting different narratives, and so on? And what’s with the term “narrative,” anyway? Would it kill them to just say “story”?
I thought it was very, very generous and implied she was a lady, despite proof to the contrary, which is a trait of genteel Southern gentlemen.
Around my house she has a much different title, which generally isn't repeated in polite company.
We love Cain's humor and his willingness to thumb his nose at the establishment.
Pelosi is lucky he didn't use a more accurate term. "Princess" is fairly polite.
