Amneville, a town in the Moselle region of northeastern France, does not look like a fault-line in the euro zone. The smell of grilled chicken wafts over the marketplace on a recent Saturday morning, the CD vendor plays German oom-pah music, and the sky behind the ochre clock tower is a steely blue.
Yet the single currency is a target for an unusual politician canvassing stallholders and shoppers in this town near the German border.
Fabien Engelmann, a 32-year old municipal plumber with tight-cropped hair, was an activist with France's leading trade union and a Trotskyist for many years. Later he joined the far-left "New Anticapitalist Party". This year he switched party again, but not on a leftist ticket.
He joined France's famed far-right National Front, and he was not the only one.
This year, five trade unionists have joined the minority party that made its name with the anti-immigrant rhetoric of its founder, Jean-Marie Le Pen. Since January, Le Pen's daughter Marine has been in charge of the party, and Engelmann says she is a magnet.
"It really is the arrival of Marine Le Pen that convinced me to join the National Front," Engelmann told Reuters. "She has an economic program that is much more geared to defending the little people, the workers, the popular classes of France."
Marine Le Pen is reshaping France's political landscape and the tremors go beyond people like this reconstructed Trotskyist. Her father played up worries about immigration, but the anxiety Marine addresses is economic and deep. The National Front's new target is the oppressive power of global finance, and the mood she is tapping spreads across Europe.

This isn’t any more “rightist” than Hitler himself was. It is an authoritarian leftism. Le Pen would gravely disappoint anyone hoping to see truly conservative principles as we know them.
Unfortunate. I knew that Marine had picked up her father’s mantle, but didn’t know she was like that. I also agree that she seems to be politically smarter and likely to be more successful than her father.
Why is it that these Nazi groups step in and misappropriate many of the political points that real conservatives should be standing on? Evidently because there are no real conservatives in Europe, or very few of them.
Maggie Thatcher was just about the last real conservative in England or Europe. Except maybe in countries like Poland.

Ah the no true Scotsman fallacy. France is France and America is America. Le Pen is willing to stand up for the dignity of France and the French people. She argues against the tidal wave of ethnically disparate third world aliens invading her home. Stands up against the crushing bureaucracy of Brussels. If only America had politicians who would do the same. Instead there is only the tweedle dee of a mulatto socialist beholden to god knows whom and a tweedle dum of Perrius Bushus Maximus II.
If the single defining qualification of an American president is simple unceasing obeisance and groveling towards Israel then Americans do not deserve or even need the vote. I’m sure Bibi would be perfectly willing to appoint a viceroy, not that it’s even necessary.
I don’t disagree with European countries keeping out waves of aliens coming into their countries. Algerians stay in Algeria and French in France. And I read Le Pen’s book with interest, when it first came out. I also know that the other parties did their best to smear him. But, regretably, he did in the end seem to be a bigot.
Like the days of the John Birch Society. I agreed with many of their views, but I wished there was someone better to express them.

MLP is not any kind of Conservative, Far Right, Right, or otherwise.
MLP is a Statist which is the total opposite of a Conservative. MLP believes in the power of the State over individual rights & Liberty, she believes in government control & regulation, & has no problem with what Tocqueville called “ the soft tyranny of authoritarian government.”
I think these neo-Nazi neo-fascist groups are attracted to MLP like a moth to a flame. They share the same core beliefs, even though she tries to downplay that aspect. By concentrating on the anti-American, anti-capitalist agenda, much of her support now comes from the far left: the Trotskyites, Communists, anti-capitalists etc.
Never forget that Marine le Pen is the daughter and protégé of Holicoast denier, anti-Semite (as in Jew hater), and an outspoken hater of Israel, Jean-Marie le Pen. His daughter Marion aka Marine le Pen refuses to distance herself from those views. The National Front Party (FN) is very anti-American, anti-free enterprise, anti-capitalist, etc
