GOP’s silent majority (will choose Romney, says editorial)
The Hill ^ | September 26, 2011 | John Feehery

Posted on 09/28/2011 3:48:38 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

The silent majority of the Republican Party asserts itself in presidential elections and in real primaries with real voters. The silent majority doesn’t do straw polls or conventions or caucuses. They have jobs they have to get to.

These are the folks who nominated Ike over Robert Taft. They nominated Nixon in 1960 and again in 1968. They nominated Ford over Reagan, Reagan over Bush, Bush over Dole, Dole over Buchanan, Bush II over McCain and McCain over Romney.

They like to pick the people they know. They like to pick the guy (and it has always been a guy) who has paid his dues on the national stage. They don’t pick insurgents, they don’t pick revolutionaries (except for Goldwater, and look how well that worked out for them), and they don’t pick dark horses.

They aren’t going to pick Michele Bachmann. They aren’t going to pick Newt Gingrich or Rick Santorum or Jon Huntsman or Herman Cain (despite his nice victory in Florida).

And, right now, it doesn’t look like they are going to pick Rick Perry.

That leaves Mitt Romney, unless, of course, Jeb Bush gets in the race.

The silent majority will assert itself eventually. It always does.

don’t want Romney and now I don’;t want Perry, what an utter farce this all is.
We can’t even get a decent candidate who has a good chance of winning

Mitt Romney has a credibility problem with conservatives, the problem being that he has no credibility at all. He’ll say anything to get elected.

I do agree that Romney could get the nomination under some circumstances, mainly that conservatives are unable to unite behind a credible conservative candidate. That appears to be the case at the moment. But there are still 11 months before the Republican convention and a lot can happen by then.

Some of the early primaries are open primaries.....democrats are allowed to vote in these “republican” primaries. Big mistake.

Whoever this silent majority is, their power is draining like a tub with the plug out. The day of the RINO is about over.

These inside the beltway and their other old timer ilk just do not understand that pretty much since 2006 and 2008 the political landscape has drastically changed.

If the GOP does nominate Romney then the “silent majority” must also be a deaf one.

No More RINO’s for office.

True, but I will support any GOP candidate over 0bummer. One thing to remember, a lot of people were willing to take Romney over McCain in 2008.

Romney tried to FORCE his clone on Massachusetts,
which is now saddled with Deval Patrick.
Romney will do the same the USA (as the backstabber
did in 2008)

Have you read Herman Cain’s biography posted today? Here’s how I responded to that:

“Herman Cain, compared with Barack Obama, and every one of the other GOP candidates, is waaaay over qualified for the job! He was 100% successful in every job he ever had. He knows what is good for business, and good business is 100% good for America! He’s the man with the plan!
He is my Main Cain!”

Try to locate the thread. It is amazing what Herman Cain has accomplished. He is fully capable of reviving the country, and of beating Obama, who didn’t accomplish anything before becoming president! Coming up another black man, too, would steal the old “racist” game of this division administration! And don’t think they aren’t planning to use it. I love it!

Oh, what great faces to put forward for the GOP! Just what the brand needs (to wither and die). Romney or Perry... whatta choice:

A plastic, 2-diminsional gazillionaire who represents Wall Street, right during a time of severe economic strain...

Or, a harsher, more dullard version of George W. Bush, who comes across less empathetic and more incoherent, yet shares his loathesome love of illegals.

Good going, GOP! I’m sure the ‘independents’ will really, really love these brilliant choices! ‘Conservatives’ too!

I agree. Romney will be nothing but Obama-lite. He’ll just talk about “reform” and “reorganizing” the federal government when the majority today is calling for repeal and elimination.

He’ll talk about “cuts” that are just smaller increases in the massive federal budget. He says he’d lower the federal workforce by 10% “through attrition” which means, “hey, here’s a big check to get out but your taxpayer funded fat pensions and cadillac health plans will still be yours.”

I’d go back to 2006 levels and cut all but the military by 25% accross the board except for those agencies I’d eliminate completely (like EPA and Energy Dept. to start).

No, Romney will spend the election coming up with more “plans” to solve every problem known to man because “he’s soooooooooo smart.”
