A 34-year-old genetic researcher with ties to Yale University will appear Monday in a Dryden courtroom, charged with the first-degree rape of a Town of Ithaca woman. Navneet K. Tyagi of New Haven, Conn. is charged with forcible sex.
According to the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office, Tyagi drove from Connecticut to the victim’s home, where he allegedly “held her captive for several hours, forcing her to engage in sexual intercourse.” He was arraigned before Judge Clauson in the Town of Dryden Court and sent to Tompkins County Jail in lieu of $500,000 cash bail.
Cornell Public Safety and the New Haven Police Department assisted Tompkins County Deputies in their investigation. Cornell University directed our inquiries to the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office, which was unavailable for comment.
According to the Yale website, Navneet is a Postdoctoral Fellow in Genetics at the school and a scientist at the Howard Hughes Medical Institution. Yale spokesman Thomas Conroy told us the school is aware of the arrest, but would have no other comment. HHMI did not immediately respond to our requests for comment.
If true, one life pretty well shot to smithereens so far as his career goes, I would think. Not to mention the woman’s.
I am sure he will be let go if he can prove its part of his culture.

His first name sounds Indian and his last, Japanese.
Tyagi is a common Paki name, per Wikipedia. A Moose?
Anyhow I suppose he could call this a “genetics experiment gone awry.”

She’s an Ithacite. Dunno about him. Why would the city of Dryden Court get involved in a crime that was alleged to have happened in Ithaca, where she lives?

Google confirms my guess on the first name. However, the Wikipedia identifies the last name as North Indian or Paki, either Hindu or Mooselimb.
As rape cases go, this one's not that interesting (especially given that Navneet turns out to be a guy). Not enough out there to chew over, at least not yet. Can't hold a candle to DSK. Of course, something nasty might come out about the accuser, or the perp might turn out to have had RoP motivation. Either eventuality would lift the boredom.

The town justice courts are typically open limited hours. As a result, and in accordance with state enabling laws, police will often take an arrested defendant to whichever court in the county happens to be available for arraignment. At arraignment bail is set and little else. Thereafter the case is transferred to the “regular” court.
