Perry’s footsteps heard in the Latino community
La Voz Bilingüe ^ | 09/20/2011 | staff

President Obama was elected by a Latino constituency that believed he would also deliver on an immigration reform as a priority issue. Once in power however, the president chose instead to spend his significant political clout on other things like national insurance reform that quickly diminished his ability to govern.

Political pressure by Latino organizations such as the National Council of La Raza and Latino groups led by congressman Gutiérrez has resulted in a grudging allowance of 300,000 potential arrangements within the power of the administration designed to reverse deportation decisions made against undocumented workers with no criminal record. This is a poor substitute for the real thing expected by the Latino community whose vote was the key difference in Obama’s election especially in the eight battle ground states, including Colorado.

Now comes Republican Gov. Rick Perry of Texas who’s immigration package of political promises are very similar to that of Bush’s when he garnered the support of a significant part of the Latino community. The difference with Perry is that Texas already has a Dream Act of sorts that allows undocumented students to pay in-state tuition provided they fulfill certain requirements of education and residency.

Perry also has stated that he does not believe in a wall on the border that would divide the United States and Mexico. Although these stances do not sit well with the Tea Party, they are resonating in parts of a Latino community that has proven its political independence election after election.

Obama, who is up for reelection, has his work cut out as he attempts to meet the challenge of securing the same kind of support from the Latino community he enjoyed in 2008. I remember the outpouring of enthusiasm especially from young Latinos who provided unquestioned loyalty to candidate Obama in his primary struggle with Hillary Clinton and the general election that sealed that support across the Latino community.

The same will not be true this time around if what the president offers again is more of the same. The Latino community may have to think long and hard about other options like candidate Rick Perry, which are offering the same kind of things and have a track record to back their claim.

Perry also has stated that he does not believe in a wall on the border that would divide the United States and Mexico.

Tell you what, I'll support a wall across the Texas/Mexico Border as soon as someone can tell me how it's going to be constructed in the middle of the Rio Grande River keeping in mind that river also includes several really big lakes.

You can not wall off the Texas Mexico Border without surrendering US Waters to Mexico!

We tried that on border states, Obama filed a suit and Hillary reported us to the UN.

More excuses. You can go around the lakes and rivers. He can continue his denial that a wall will work but you see how that is selling....not good. His support is decreasing by the minute. Bachmann learned that support is fickle and can be gone at a snap of a finger. Perry thankfully is going to learn that fact. He is one of the biggest people with excuses I have ever seen. He complains about Obama not helping with Immigration but he has only been President for two years. Perry was President for 10 years and he has not done anything with a Republican President.....he didn’t complain about President Bush not assisting him with stopping the aliens. Why? Where are the letters to Bush asking for assistance? Where are the lawsuits to the federal government when Bush was President. He did nothing and now that he is running for President suddenly is complaining that little Obama is not helping me.....come on. This guy clearly loves the illegal aliens. He feels sorry for them. Remember he said that you should not care about a last name or hearless if we don’t agree with giving aliens free bennies. He is passionate over the aliens.

Perry won’t feel so bad when he realizes how much time and money he wasted trying to get the GOP nomination, will be offset by all the gains in his popularity with Chicanos.

He can love them all he wants but in the end they’ll vote for Democrats and that will be the end of this country.

The democrats want a republican to grant amnesty. They will take the credit and the votes. Then they will do kicks and high fives promising the moon to Latinos just like they did to blacks.

The plantation will have all new members courtesy of the GOP.

First, you can't go around the Rio Grande, it runs the entire border. You fence it, you prevent Texans (Americans) access who make their livings off of those waters. If you're talking about strategic fencing, then you actually agree with Perry.

As for the Bush years, Perry did ask for help and Bush put in the beginnings of the electronic fence and he sent in the National Guard. Obama cut the funding. We've got aprox 1.1-1.2 million illegals living in our state that we can't throw out, we can't deny them services, and thanks to the Supreme Court, we have to educate them, all at the cost of Texas Tax Payers. On top of that we have to secure the border for the rest of the country with our cops. On our border our DPS Helicopters and recently a Lifeflight helicopter in US air space took gun fire from the Mexican side of the border. We are invaded almost nightly by NARCO-Terrorist and corrupt Mexican Military Units that out gun and out man our police officers that are left to do the job the US Government wont do and you think demanding that the US Government wont do their Constitutional Duty is complaining?

Now I'll grant you that Perry's response "heartless" and "we don't care about your last name" was a stupid answer and if he can't explain that then he doesn't deserve our support, but don't accuse him of being weak on the border or "loving Illegals" when he is the only one running who is actually in the fight.

Personally I think he fell back on the lines that were being used on Texans when the in-state tuition issue was going on, which we supported, and for that he was just plain stupid. It didn't work then either. But what we did understand is that we had no other options, they are here, we aren't allowed to kick them out so there are two options for them, jail or working out of a Home Depot parking lot, we chose to give the children a third option, give them a $151 discount at our Jr. colleges and turn them into Tax Payers. We didn't like it, but the other two options leave them sucking up or tax dollars with nothing in return.

I'm not a Perrybot, I'm not sure that Gov. Goodhair would make a good President, I don't want the left to fall back on the "he's stupid" story with him not being able to disprove it and the swing voters believing it.  But I know Mitt is the RINO we don't want, Palin isn't running, Bachmann is either an idiot or has surrounded herself with idiots and that keeps her from getting my support, I don't think Cain has the experience, and I'm not sure that Newt can carry the middle and the rest I just don't like. But maybe a Newt/Cain or a Cain/Newt I can send money to.

What’s funny is that one Latina lady I am close to who has gone through legitimate channels to become a permanent resident says she is completely against anyone who is not for kicking all illegals out of the US.

She says the people who come across illegally are the worst of the people that go through her native country.

We can build what we need IN MEXICO and there’s nothing they can do about it.

LOL, OK, well some of us live in the real world.

But listen, the way to fix the border problem isn't too far away from your idea, the President needs to come to the realization that it is a Clear and Present Danger to the United States and send in the Military to kill the Narco- Terrorist and corrupt military and restore order to Mexico. I know for a fact that we are war gaming it and the next President will be the one with his finger on the trigger. We need to make sure that the guy we send to the White House is the guy who will pull the trigger. I believe that Perry understands that and will be willing to pull that trigger.

That does not mean that I think he will properly handle the people already here, but he understands the ignored war in Mexico and I don't believe anybody else running does.

We can hope that with restored order that some of them will go home, then we can give them incentives to go home and then we can throw out the stragglers. But until then, a fence or wall or whatever is not going to stop them, these people are running for their lives, not to get a $151 discount at Texas Jr. Colleges.

That is a completely rediculous assertion, which makes the article useless.

He has promised: to restart deportation of illegals; no path to citizenship; full border security with boots on the ground to prevent illegals entering the country; a fence where it works; NO DREAM ACT at the federal level; no sanctuary cities; and a strictly controlled guest-worker program that will ensure immigrants don't overstay their visas.

So, will you build the wall around the lakes and rivers on the Mexican side, thus seizing their territory and starting a war?

Or will you build the wall on OUR side, thus surrendering valuable water assets to a foreign country?

Neither sounds very conservative to me, but apparently you have a much better idea of what that means.

You might also explain how the many species of animals which depend on the water will get through your impenetrible fence. Or maybe they should just wither and die in the desert. Anything for “the wall”.
