ORLANDO, Fla. — Former Godfather’s Pizza CEO Herman Cain won the Presidency 5 straw poll here Saturday, delivering a blow to Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s front-runner status and a victory for a candidate who has struggled to transform his grass-roots popularity into strong showings in national polls.

“Tonight’s winner is Herman Cain,” Florida Gov. Rick Scott announced. “It shows you something: The road to the White House comes through Florida, and it pays to spend time here.”

Mr. Cain received 37 percent of the more than 2,600 votes cast.

“Thank you to the Republican voters for this incredible honor of being named the winner of the Presidency 5 straw poll in Florida today,” Mr. Cain said. “This is a sign of our growing momentum and my candidacy that cannot be ignored. I will continue to share my message of ‘common-sense solutions’

Perry rewrote the books with a collapse of historic proportions. Never before has a candidate entered with such high expectations, only to self immolate in two debates.

When you call your own party base racist and then heartless in those 2 debates, there is a good chance you’ll lose support. The damage was totally self-inflicted.

We need to get back to the reality of what a "Straw Poll" is: A popularity contest, among a small sampling of political junkies, many of whom share a common agenda. That is not necessarily reflective of GOP voters as a whole and certainly not reflective of the entire electorate as a whole.

A Straw Poll is a "Self-Selection Bias" poll with as little validity as an Internet poll that attracts the hard-core, agenda-driven, political junkies while ignoring the vast majority of regular voters whose opinion actually elects Presidents.

Case in point: Who won the third debate, according to the "Self-Selection Bias" FOX News Internet poll by a very wide margin?

HINT: Who is followed around by a small but very vocal army of hard-core True Believers? (No, not her. She did not debate.)

You guessed it: The BIG winner of the last debate was, supposedly, Ron Paul. (See below)

That is not to say that Cain does not have merit as a viable candidate. That is just saying that, until the first rigorously conducted polls come out after this last debate, it is silly to hang your hat on the results of a Self-Selection Bias poll.

That would be a workable winning ticket, all up side no down side.

When Bachmann or Paul wins a straw poll, it’s meaningless...another case of selective memory.

A Internet poll and a canned fart have the same value.

Assuming that the field stays just as it is, with no other additions, I really don’t see a reason to panic just because it seems it seems it will come down to a choice between Perry and Romney. At this very time in 2007, Huckabee and Fred Thompson where the top 2, and nobody seriously thought McCain would be the nominee. Cain is not out by a long shot, and Cain fans need to let him know it. If you are going to be a political junkie and follow the election day in and day out, you have got to learn patience and perseverance.

Wait till Sarah jumps in, she will take Florida too. She is just waiting for the RIGHT strategic timing. The longer she stays out the more popular she becomes. She has them all guessing. She will jump in at the end after they all beat each other up and walk away with it.

Cain is accomplished, thoughtful, articulate, and likeable.

How well can he navigate the treacherous paths of DC?

George Bush pulled that garbage over the “comprehensive immigration” bill. That might have been the time c2005-2006 when he started plummeting in the polls, never to recover.

See you at the signing....was a gift to Pelosi
we just have to make sure that Romney doesnt benefit because he agrees with everything Bush did including amnesty for illegals.

Agreed. Its not just that he holds the opinions on illegals that he does. It is that he attacked his own base using the language and tactics of the left.

I’d be surprised if Perry even wins future re-election to the governorship of Texas.

If Cain gets the nomination, it’ll be interesting to see how the democrats go after him. Since they’ve made such a big deal out of dear leader’s race, how do they go after a black nominee without themselves being accused of racism?
