THE remains of notorious bushranger Ned Kelly have been found at the former Melbourne prison, Pentridge.

An exhaustive 20-month search through historical and genetic records has unearthed one of the most colourful chapters in Australian history, and a man who Attorney-General Robert Clark this morning called "one of the most controversial characters" in our national identity.

A DNA sample from Kelly's sister's great grandson, Leigh Oliver, confirmed the remains were those of the bushranger.

Doctors and scientists at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine identified the body.

Kelly's remains have long been rumoured to be at Pentridge.

Attorney General Robert Clark said the efforts of the forensic team were extraordinary.

"To think a group of scientists could identify the body of a man who was executed more than 130 years ago, and moved and buried in a haphazard fashion among 33 other prisoners most of whom are not identified, is amazing," Mr Clark said

Kelly, dressed in home-made plate metal armor and helmet, was captured and sent to jail, maybe it was way too heavy

No, it didn't protect his legs. So they shot him in the legs and brought him down.

And others regard him as a cop-killing armed robber, who planned mass murder. The truth is probably somewhere in between.

Wiki- Bushrangers, or bush rangers, originally referred to runaway convicts in the early years of the British settlement of Australia who had the survival skills necessary to use the Australian bush as a refuge to hide from the authorities. The term "bushranger" then evolved to refer to those who abandoned social rights and privileges to take up "robbery under arms" as a way of life, using the bush as their base.[2] These bushrangers were roughly analogous to British "highwaymen" and American "Old West outlaws," and their crimes often included robbing small-town banks or coach services.

In 1869, the 14-year-old Ned Kelly was arrested for assaulting a Chinese pig farmer named Ah Fook.

One of those Ah Fook moments in one's life.

This probably doesn’t really qualify for GGG status, but After our discussion of armor the other day, I thought you might find it interesting.
