Twenty-five U.S. special forces killed early Saturday in Afghanistan were on a mission to rescue another team of military personnel pinned down by insurgents, a U.S. military official told CNN.
The helicopter that went down in eastern Afghanistan carried 30 U.S. military members, including 22 Navy SEALs and three other special forces. They were part of a "quick reaction force" sent in to pick up others engaged in a fierce firefight, the official said.
In the single deadliest incident since the start of the decade-long Afghan war, the Army Chinook carrying a team of U.S. special forces and U.S. and Afghan soldiers went down in Wardak province.
Insurgents are believed to have shot down the helicopter, a military official said.
The majority of the Navy SEALs who died belonged to the same covert unit that conducted the raid that killed Osama bin Laden in May, though they were not the same men, the official said.
"It's a big loss" for the SEALs, one of the officials said. "The numbers are high."

Interesting to review that. ROEs and comm equipment failures led to the deaths of a lot of good men. Cell phones work reliably even in Holestan but we can't give the best trained fighters in the world a good satphone to talk to the Ops Commander. Funny, isn't it. I mean if iPhone's don't work Apple stock takes a nosedive and if they don't fix it they are out of business. But a defense contract where lives are at stake just goes on and on and on, an Energizer Bunny laying golden eggs.
I think another question about strategy is in order, which is, does this really work, is it really worth it? I fully understand decapitating the enemy by taking out HVTs, and using active measures of disruption, but when we are talking about SEAL TEAM 6 kinds of guys, this is really really expensive, and really really expensive when you lose 20 of them on a rescue op. There are alternatives using 500lb laser guided bombs or laying down cluster bombs on a bunch of guys pinning down a position (way where is tac air in all of this?). Of course there is more collateral damage, but if you cannot take the collateral damage, and I will concede that we might not be able to, then maybe you just decide you should not fight the damned war in the first place.

Has the imperial federal government ordered our flag to half mast yet? I did mine in the front yard, whether they do or not, I will honor those men. I went up to the church and lowered the 3 flags up there also.
During Vietnam, the rule makers decided that our aircraft could not engage Soviet ships in Haiphong harbor that were delivering weapons and ammunition to the North Vietnamese communists. We lost a lot of planes and pilots to antiaircraft fire coming up from the laughing and grinning Soviet knuckledraggers aboard those ships.
