I am very surprised Seal Team 6 would be a QRF. As good as they are on the ground, they don’t have the firepower Marines or Airborne troops have.
We were monitoring, but, never got the call. Word is, this was a snatch operation, and the operations commander underestimated the strength of the enemy and was trying to cover his ass when the reinforcements were called in.
God help us all, when your ass is in this deep, you call in heavy gunships, i.e. specter's, etc. to support the men on the ground!
This mission does not pas the smell test with my unit!

When I woke up this morning and read the drudge headlines I got physically sick to my stomach that our “Hip-Hop” POS POTUS threw his Muslim comrades a bone for Ramadan. Namely, our brave Sp Opts warriors. I wish I could exact my outrage on him personally.
Spot on. I posted before I read both of yours. A Tier 1 asset doesn't get used for this; even if it was one of their own. This was a Ranger, Marine, or 101/82nd-type of mission.
I did 3 tours in MEUSOC, and this was one of our bread and butter missions.
Do you think that the “snatch op” was a set-up?

Why oh why oh why oh why do we keep doing that? When we put our solidiers in a position, it ought to be a death trap for those who would attack them. If we cannot secure our own people then don't put them there. When we put our soldires somewhere they should be able to call in fire support and not have to rely on Seal Team 6. It is all so like the beach scene in Apocolypse Now. Except even they called in napalm to bring about some peace and quiet.
I would bet those dead men would be the first to bitch slap you. What a dumb statement.
Those men did not order themselves into that operation. They were selected by their commanders and ordered to go. It is the job of Command to tailor the mission to the assets. I am sure that those highly professional special operators, notwithstanding their eagerness to engage our country’s enemies would agree with me absolutely.
I wonder if all the in-depth reporting on the bin Laden mission gave away too much of our playbook. I don’t care for all these shows on Military Channel or Discovery that show glimpses of our missions and training. Just too much info out there. Prayers to the family members and shipmates left behind.
Has anyone noted whether the Basshat Traitor in Chief is NOT Wearing his gold Wedding Ring or Jewelry now that he is in Ramadan???????? It wasn’t a dumb statement at all. We don’t know all the facts, for sure, but at face value, SEALS are not an appropriate unit to do a QRF. They don’t have enough hardware and options that a standard QRF package brings.
Read paratrooper’s post, and mine. A standard Marine package comes with 2 snakes looking for the ambush with infrared; Rangers and Airborne troops bring their longbows to the party.

I would say they went because it was some of their own they were going to rescue. But none of those men would have said I am better than he is so let someone else go.
50 Marines maybe, but SEALs usually operate a bit more operationally agile - fast and lethal.
Why use a Chinook to do a quick strike rescue? Too big of a slow moving, loud target. One lucky RPG shot takes out a lot of valuable assets.
