Rep. Giffords should resign her seat
CNN ^ | 24 June 2011 | Paul Sracic

In the months since the shooting of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, reports about her condition have been sparse. We have learned of a follow-up surgery to repair her skull and that she was recently released from a rehabilitation hospital.

Also released were a set of photos. We still, however, do not know the extent of her injuries. Out of respect for the privacy of the family, the media has not delved too deeply into the more common and troubling aftereffects of a serious trauma to the brain.

Should the media and the public be so reluctant to demand more information? The Arizona Democrat is not just a private citizen; she is a sitting member of Congress. Do Giffords' responsibilities demand a more searching inquiry into her health? No one is asking this question because it seems moot.

In reality, the congresswoman is not carrying out any of these responsibilities.

Even from the limited information that has been made available, we know that for the near term Giffords cannot carry out her committee assignments, debate on the floor of the House, and, most importantly cast a vote. The result is that for all intents and purposes, the gunman's bullet that so severely injured Giffords also silenced the people of Arizona's 8th Congressional District.

I’m glad she survived and hope she has a full recovery.

That said, if she cannot fullfill her duties, she needs to resign.

If she can’t preform the job, she should give up the seat.

Its not her fault and I’m sorry for her but the people of her district deserve effective representation.

Not only is this sad, but why do I get the feeling that the sleezebag democratic party is going to try to prop her up to run for that open Senate seat in 2012.

If the people of her district are happy with the representation they are getting then, I guess she should stay. When it comes down to it, a Democrat not being there in AZ doesn’t affect my Republican situation here in VA.

So a deranged leftist gunman should be able to over ride the results of an election? No thanks.

Hey. She’s a brain damaged democrat. How is that any different than most other congress critters.

I’d rather have her representing me than a Frank or a Wiener or a Pelosi or a Reid or a......

Ms. Giffords should resign her seat IMHO......but really, that decision lies in the hands of the voters in her district. It is clearly evident that this poor woman has a very long recovery ahead of her. I have also chided her husband Michael for standing by and allowing the sham the Democrat Party put forward in trying to get political mileage out of her misfortune, but I forgive him, because the good man has resigned from NASA to care for his ailing wife. Bravo, to him, and may the good Lord in heaven bring full health and vigor back to this deserving woman, regardless of her politics.

“I’m glad she survived and hope she has a full recovery. That said, if she cannot fullfill her duties, she needs to resign.”

I'm glad that she is doing better and wish her a full recovery as well. If she should indeed resign, I don't know if the governor would select a replacement for the remainder of her term or if a special election would take place. If the governor should pick her replacement, then don't be surprised if it should be her husband as he just recently retired from the military. If a special election should be held, then he may be a candidate. Obviously, I don't know, just making idle speculation...

I was thinking that, but I’m glad you said it first.

I can count on one hand the number of congresspeople that provide effective representation.

There have been rumblings that her husband, recently retired astronaut Mark Kelly, is being groomed to run for the U.S. Senate.

The House should set rules that if a member does not attend for a period of time, let’s say 3 months, regardless of reason, the seat is declared open and returned to the district to be filled.

The district/state can decide if, how, when that seat gets filled.

No. 1, if she would have been a Republican you can bet every gorey detail would have been hashed out in the media - x-rays, dr. reports, reports from neighbors, her trash cans checked - every piece of information thrown out there for public view - repulsive media.

That said, if she can not perform her duties as required, she sould step down. Our national security comes first and foremost in this situation. Her decisions may not affect VA but could affect our country. But, if she has a clean bill of health she should stay in her position. IMHO. Also, the incident will assure her victories in her state in the future (that’s also MHO)

She is a Democrat and thus permanently owns the office, and may at will hand it down to her immediate family or heirs as she wishes.

She's a democrat — all rules go out the window. However, I still say that the people being hurt are her constituents, not so much me.

But if she were a Republican? This would be the lead question on every talk show for days and weeks and months.
