Suspected pill addict David Laffer has been charged with slaughtering four people in a Long Island pharmacy to score a bag full of painkillers for his nagging, drug-addled wife, who was his getaway driver after the Father's Day massacre, police and witnesses said yesterday.
"He was doing it because he lost his job and I was sick," his wife, Melinda Laffer, confessed to reporters as she was walked out of Suffolk County police headquarters in Yaphank early today.
When asked what she would tell the families of the victims, she said, "I'm sorry that he did all of this."
David, a 33-year-old Army veteran, and Melinda, 29, were arrested yesterday after 40 Suffolk cops dramatically busted into their home as police helicopters hovered overhead.

In 1995 my Dad was weeks just a few weeks away from dying of lung cancer that spread to his bones. There had been lots of chemo and he was practically skin and bones ... hadn't been able to hold down food in days and had reached the point that he had no desire to eat. I got some marijuana for him and he smoked some. Half an hour later he ate and enjoyed a BLT. It was heartbreaking that I had not gotten marijuana for him weeks before.
'Conservative circles' contain folks like me that have been there and aren't going to gripe about medicinal marijuana. Perhaps it is just that we are not as loud as the people who condemn such.
Oh, they are just using that as an excuse because they want to get drugs...
