ObamaCare Subsidies Won't Keep Up With Premiums

If the health care law survives the current legal and political attacks, it will soon come up against the law of economics.

Initially, individuals buying insurance via exchanges created by the Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare) will get subsidies that rise in line with premium cost growth.

But, starting in 2019, individuals would have to shoulder an ever-greater share of premiums as cost curbs kick in if subsidies top 0.5% of GDP, as the Congressional Budget Office projects.

The proper thing to fix the health care situation is for the government to get out of the health care business altogether.

That means abolish Obamacare, abolish Medicare, abolish Medicaid, abolish the FDA.

Even most FReepers are emotionally attached to this issue somehow and the right thing won’t be done.

Note that giving your kid ritalin constitutes a “pre-existing condition”.

My daughter just found out her company’s health insurance will triple June 1. I told her to just cancel it and if she gets sick, go to the ER like everyone else. People making $30K a year can’t afford $600 a month for insurance. For families, it will be over $1200. How is this making things better?

The increased premiums are mostly due to the mandates in Obamacare that are already be instituted. We loved our insurance company, best service ever, great doctors and no paperwork. It was so popular that it was rated the top in customer satisfaction in the country. Oh, and Group Health seems to have endorsed Obamacare, I’m glad we’re done with them.

But, the company dropped them last year because their premiums were simply unsustainable. We now have AETNA, which I have always hated, but we get the same coverage at half the price. So, your daughter’s company needs to do some shopping for another insurance company.

I pay my own health insurance. Since Obamacare was passed, my premium has increased by about 35%.

I have catastrophic insurance as I prefer to pay cash if/when I see a doctor.

Your health insurance premiums would be cheaper if the government wasn’t involved. Check your policy. In mine, there are mandated provisions for drug and alcohol abuse, child birth, and other utterly useless to me things. One size does not fit all and as a young man, my health care risks are much cheaper than for a woman who goes to a doctor much more often.

I haven’t seen a doctor in 10 years. Some people act shocked when I tell them that. They seem to indicate I might be at an increased risk of dying from some uncaught disease.

What they don’t explain is exactly why leaving this behind would be a bad thing or fighting to stick around for another year is a good thing.

the whole thing was meant to set the dominoes tumbling to create a train-wreck and critical system failure sometime after 2014, which would cause people to flock to the FedGov and beg for them to fix it by creating single payer.

A lot of the people where she works are just looking for other jobs. It has really dampened morale. My daughter is only 24 and healthy, so I think $600 per month is ridiculous. She’d be better off saving/investing that amount and paying as she goes. For families, it isn’t so easy. And I worry about new doctors. If the profit is reduced to the point where it doesn’t make sense to even go to med school with loans to pay back, we really are in trouble. A lot of areas already have doctor shortages. I guess we’ll just import them.

All part of the plan to get us to single-payer.

Do a search on individual health insurance plans in SC. I just did and you have a whole lot of choices for a whole lot less money than the company plan. Young people don’t need a one size fits all policy if they are in general good health.

I did a quick search and it said that the policies start at $31/month. My son is unemployed right now and we are paying for his health insurance, his was like $90/month.

Great idea. Thanks. I’ll tell her and I’ll tell her to tell those she works with as well.

Nice diversion from Bin Laden’s “supposed” death as well. LOL
