(SALT LAKE CITY)-A new study implies some of the happiest states in the union also have the highest suicide rates and Utah is no exception.
According to the study, Utah is the number one state in terms of residents well-being although it scored ninth in overall suicide rate as three other states also had top 10 rankings in both categories, including Colorado, Nevada and Wyoming.
Researchers for this study, suggesting that living around people who are satisfied with their lives can result in misery for their neighbors, are cautioning against the assertion that misery really loves company.
According to the Utah Department of Health, suicide is the second-leading cause of death in the state among men aged 10-44.
Doug Thomas, the assistant director of mental health and substance abuse for the state, says when it comes to suicide in the state, he is particularly concerned about youth.
According to the latest statistics obtained from the department, 80 percent of youths who commit suicide are male, while 93 percent of youths aged 13-21 who commit suicide are Caucasian, while 63 percent of those who commit suicide had contact with the juvenile justice system.
Statistics also assert firearms are the most common form of death for youth suicides, while most youths complete suicide in their homes.
The department has released several signs of possible suicide and exhorts Utahns to prevent this from happening by effectively communicating with friends who contemplate it by not being judgmental or dismissive in any way. .
Einstein: “Happiness is a goal for pigs.”
So what’s the top 10 states for the highest suicide?
Is it a secret?
Farewell? But you're not going anywhere... are you?
I recently saw a study claiming that Sweden had the happiest citizens yet also had one of the highest suicide rates. Seems like a contradiction that’s difficult to resolve.
If the unhappy commit suicide then only the happy remain.
Unless people lie about being happy.
Most of them are mountain states.
I saw an article two weeks ago that said many suicide studies of suicide in U.S. & even the world were reviewed. They said a definitive "correlation" -- (they wouldn't call it a "cause") -- was living in higher regions of the country.
And, actually, the article went further than that. It wasn't even just "living" in a mountain region. Visiting a mountain region, the article said, amounted to a higher suicide rate than even the locals living there!
They wondered if higher gun ownership had anything to do with it...yet they said that the suicide rate in higher elevations was true even in other countries where gun ownership wasn't a factor.
But, they concluded that many of the urban areas in the East/Northeast have fairly low suicide rates per capita...whereas the per capita rates are high in mountain areas where perhaps people feel more isolated or insulated.
I read 86% of those who committed suicide had middle names rhyming with ‘Hussein’, while the other 17% who quoted statistics were found to be liars. =;^)
I wonder what the baby killer abortion rate is in Utah. I will go down and report back.
http://www.standard.net/topics/health/2011/04/14/utah-abortion-rates-lowest-1999
Looks like only 3279 abortions in 2009.
Of course they were most likely all Democrats so we are slowly thinning them out.
Mormons? Naaah...they wouldn’t do that.
Happiness should not be a goal. It’s the by-product of living right.
Well, I think we're all desensitized by stats like these...'cause by comparison to other states in this area, Utah's "pretty good." Yet what if I wrote, "Looks like only 3279 infanticides in 2009." -- which is what abortion is...
(I don't think we'd use the word "only")....
Cancer rates began a dramatic rise in the 60s - 70s not because there was so much more cancer as proposed by the emerging environmental whack-jobs with their mushy idiot degrees, but because of the diagnostic tools to detect, quantify and classify it. In this case, you have religious aspects that play a role (Protestants for example have a higher suicide rate than Catholics, but Catholics have a higher divorce rate)......... Utah is Mormon, parts of the South, Southern Baptist etc etc etc. I doubt they can really isolate the variables here. But that's just a hunch.
How’s my favorite religious biggot?
Hey did you ever figure out who the God of Jesus Christ is (Jn 20:17)?
I agree...'cause whatever they are...they're multiple. Just like individual people committing self-homicide for different reasons...with oft' the case no doubt multiple reasons per person.
And you who claims to be against that?
Doesn't intolerance = bigotry?
Why won't you tolerate me?
