Possible tax on sodas in Texas

Texas - A Texas lawmaker says a tax on soda is one way the state can get a handle on the massive budget shortfall.

The bill would put a one-cent tax per ounce of regular or diet soda sold in retail stores.

Supporters say the luxury tax would give the budget a much needed boost.

Lawmakers say the bill would also be beneficial because it could cause Texans to drink less soda.

They want to tax and they want to push nanny state ‘healthy eating.’

This, from a state that has featured Fried Coca-Cola (yes, you read that correctly) at the State Fair. That was a few years ago, of course. Last year, it was fried pretzel-batter raviolis filled with beer.

Diet pop is a luxury? Well, don’t that make me a regular ol’ Little Lord Fauntleroy.

“And then if people cut back on soda, so the soda tax revenue falls short of projections, then what will they do?”

Same thing Obama did: individual soda mandate.

Within two years, it will be a nickle per can.

So you're saying they'll reduce it that drastically that quickly? It is going to start out at least 12 cents per can.

The bill would put a one-cent tax per ounce of regular or diet soda sold in retail stores.

Fighting against these idiots with anything but mockery is just a waste of our time.

I am moving more and more toward the idea that people would much rather vote for the winner of the verbal beatdown than the person winning the debate with facts.

Like the Kinks said in that old 80s tune, lets “Give the people what they want”.

“The logic escapes me.
If people drink less soda, you won’t get your tax.”

You assume far too much if you think lawmakers are familiar with the relationship between price and demand.

In the first place they want to get more revenue by taxing soda; and then they say it’ll cut down on people drinking soda.
Is there something wrong in that logic?

YES

It's Pigouvian Taxation at its finest.

No information at all about who proposed it, the status of the proposed bill, or anything. Yes, it is one of the most poorly written stories I’ve seen all year. If this were submitted for a high school newspaper as part of a journalism class, I would probably give it a grade of D if I were feeling generous.

How about a special tax on public employee pay and pensions ? I’m sure that would close the tax gap nicely.

“Lawmakers say the bill would also be beneficial because it could cause Texans to drink less soda.”

Well, I’ll just up my beer and water intake. Can’t believe this is happening in my beloved Texas...

I’m more concerned about what’s going on in west Texas though. Just talked to my daughter who lives in Midland and apparently everyone out there is in an uproar over the EPA who is attempting to stop drilling on much of the Permian Basin due to a local lizard (Sand Lizard) having been declared an endangered species. If this is true and if this happens it will have a MAJOR impact on the price of oil and gas here in the U.S. The EPA has to be dealt with asap....
