Possible tax on sodas in Texas
newschannel10 ^ | 4/19/2011 | Blair Bernier

Texas - A Texas lawmaker says a tax on soda is one way the state can get a handle on the massive budget shortfall.

The bill would put a one-cent tax per ounce of regular or diet soda sold in retail stores.

Supporters say the luxury tax would give the budget a much needed boost.

Lawmakers say the bill would also be beneficial because it could cause Texans to drink less soda.

Within two years, it will be a nickle per can...Then tax everything else.

It’s always happens like this.

1 cent per ounce is kind of a lot. And then if people cut back on soda, so the soda tax revenue falls short of projections, then what will they do?

Par for the course for TV journalism. I know 8 year olds that can write a better article.

But newschannel10 doesn’t think it’s necessary that we know which Texas lawmaker is for this crap?

Typical.

Our soda has been taxed for years. Now they’re taxing water.

Increase it and tax something else to make up the difference, lather, rinse, repeat.

Meanwhile businesses close, jobs are lost and more of us have to depend on the Govt.

In the first place they want to get more revenue by taxing soda; and then they say it’ll cut down on people drinking soda. Is there something wrong in that logic?

Let’s see... a penny per ounce.
12 cents per can of soda
72 cents per six pack.

Wow.

The logic escapes me.
If people drink less soda, you won’t get your tax.

Hopefully Rick Perry would have the good sense to veto this in the home of Dr. Pepper

Bring back cane sugar based soft drinks!

Sugared Pepsi products are now a permanent part of the Pepsi lineup. http://www.bevreview.com/2011/03/14/pepsi-throwback-mountain-dew-throwback-become-permanent/

For the other brands, this is a good time to find sugared sodas (vs HFCS). Sweetened soda which is kosher for Passover is made with cane sugar.

So go forth and fill up on sugary fizz water :D

They won’t. Once they start taxing things like soda to make up for mismanaged over spending government, their benefits and fat retirement pensions, they’ll go for everything else...

They want your money, and they’ll keep coming at ya, over and over and over. Seen all this before.

I thought Texas was a “conservative” state?

First, its the Bushes. Next, it is all the Illegal Aliens and Open Borders. Then, its North American Union NAFTA Superhighway nonsense....now....Taxing sodas

Sad that Texas is turning into California. Maybe its time to put up for sale the west Texas property I have

No place is safe from Libs

Similarly, I hope they never tax pop.
