Random Thoughts (Thomas Sowell)
Jewish World Review ^ | March 22, 2011 | Thomas Sowell

Random thoughts on the passing scene:

They say that records are made to be broken. President George W. Bush set a record by adding $3.2 trillion to the national debt over the course of his eight years in office. But Barack Obama has already beaten that record with $4.4 trillion in just his first three years in office.

People who thoughtlessly give money to panhandlers on the street seem not to realize that this is making installment payments on the degeneration of America.

Don't mention "municipal golf courses" to me. It sends my blood pressure up through the roof. What earthly excuse is there for spending the taxpayers' money subsidizing a golf course? Politicians can't even invoke "the poor," as they do when trying to justify other government boondoggles.

The vocabulary of the political left is fascinating. For example, it is considered to be "materialistic" and "greedy" to want to keep what you have earned. But it is "idealistic" to want to take away what someone else has earned and spend it for your own political benefit or to feel good about yourself.

Lou Gehrig was probably the greatest clutch hitter of all time. Although his career was cut short by the disease that bears his name, in 7 of his 14 full seasons he had over 150 runs batted in. (Babe Ruth was second with 5 seasons.) And Gehrig still holds the career record for home runs with the bases loaded.

Economists are often asked to predict what the economy is going to do. But economic predictions require predicting what politicians are going to do-- and nothing is more unpredictable.

Great point.

The mainstream media never expressed half the outrage about Mao Zedong as they did about Ronald Reagan. Yet, when it came to killing millions of innocent civilians, even Hitler was an amateur compared to Mao.

Mao is a hero to the 0bama administration.

“People who thoughtlessly give money to panhandlers on the street seem not to realize that this is making installment payments on the degeneration of America. “

Having the police exterminate every last panhandler would be a more constructive venture than the Hippie plan, which gives them guns and drugs. Pansy liberals don’t seem to realize that if you want to actually help a panhandler out of poverty, you have to set the terms of what he receives.

It’s a disgrace that idealists are even allowed to vote, if you ask me. Citizens should be tested on economic proficiency before they can vote. If we made that one simple rule, the only politicians who would exist would be principled conservatives.

Sowell a national treasure?

Absolutely!

I rarely disagree with Dr. Sowell, but when he tees off on muni golf courses, I respectfully do not agree. So much of our taxes goes to ( various combinations of) illegal aliens , welfare, Medicaid, food stamps and the like. If a municipality runs a golf course, perhaps some of us tax payers benefit.

To me, golf courses are similar to parks and libraries, and make a sound investment in a community. Besides, don't at least some muni courses make a bit of profit? Or break even?

Disagreement invited (swing away).

Governments are instituted to protect unalienable rights. Taking the fruit of my labor for any other purpose is stealing. Those that vote for it violate the 10th commandment. It is immoral and sinful.

Dr. Sowell has the talent of condensing into a few words in a way the reader will understand that which most of us can't write clearly in multiple paragraphs.

However, there are times when his fast brain may race too far ahead of his nimble fingers. And this is one of them.

"Barack Obama has already beaten that record with $4.4 trillion in just his first three years in office."
By my count, 0bama has been in office only two years, two months and going on two days.

Too long, in any event. But it would be nice to think he does have only another year remaining as President.

The vile people who picket the funerals of American soldiers killed in action are far away enough from the mourners not to be heard. It is media attention that magnifies their sick message.

I would take it as a testament to the efforts of the fallen hero that even the biggest crackpots have the freedom of speech in this country.

And it is so nice of the crackpots to come and testify at the funeral of one of the hero's that earned that freedom for them.

There is always a segment of the population that insists on reckless idealism, but you can trace the supremacy of reckless idealism over rational thought back to the passage of the 19th Amendment.

Taking the fruit of my labor for any other purpose is stealing.

And, you are correct.

(Excepting a golf course here and there, of course.)

Sorta kidding, but I do believe that local and county support for parks, nature trails, bike and jogging trails, and libraries can be a good thing.

Guess we can agree to disagree my FRiend.

Well said!

Everyone has the right of protest and the right to make fools of themselves if they so desire. The Westboro Baptist group is proficient at both.

Politicians unpredictable?
I beg to differ.
They can always be counted on to do the wrong thing!
