A Letter to America (You deserve better, cousins. And we expect better)
Wall Street Journal ^ | March 11, 2011 | Mr. Hannan is a member of the European Parliament

Posted on 03/11/2011 3:25:03 PM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

......As a Briton, I see the American republic as a repository of our traditional freedoms. The doctrines rooted in the common law, in the Magna Carta, and in the Bill of Rights found their fullest and most sublime expression in the old courthouse of Philadelphia. Britain, as a result of its unhappy membership in the European Union, has now surrendered a large part of its birthright. But our freedoms live on in America.

Which brings me to my country's present tragedy. The fears that the American patriot leaders had about a Hanoverian tyranny were, in retrospect, exaggerated. The United Kingdom did not develop into an absolutist state. Power continued to pass from the Crown to the House of Commons.

Until now. Nearly two and a half centuries after the Declaration of Independence, the grievances it adumbrated are belatedly coming true—but in Britain, rather than in North America. Colossal sums are being commandeered by the government in order to fund bailouts and nationalizations without any proper parliamentary authorization. Legislation happens increasingly through what are called standing orders, a device that allows ministers to make laws without parliamentary consent—often for the purpose of implementing EU standards. Elections have been drained of purpose, ..turnout is falling.

How aptly the British people might today apply the ringing phrases of the Declaration of Independence against their own rulers, who have "combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws."

...I have campaigned to apply Jeffersonian democracy to British political conditions,.....So you can imagine how I feel when I see the U.S. making the same mistakes that Britain has made: expanding its government, regulating private commerce, centralizing its jurisdiction, breaking the link between taxation and representation, abandoning its sovereignty.

You deserve better, cousins. And we expect better.

When France, the Netherlands and Ireland voted against the European Constitution, the referendum results were swatted aside and the document adopted regardless.

Sounds like the formula they used to pass Zer0care.

I hope that this is finally coming to a head; that people are finally so fed up with the federal government, that we’re about to shake the whole system up.

Obama’s model for the US is East Germany complete with secret police and absolute central control of power.

This isn't the "Ohio was never properly admitted as a state" thing, is it?

Nope,just the hardcore facts.

The federal government and its tax agencies, supported by our congressmen, would like for us to believe that the power of the government to tax was greatly changed by the ratification of the Sixteenth Amendment in February 1913. Having been denied the right to tax incomes by a Supreme Court decision in 1895, Uncle Sam claims that, once this Amendment was ratified, a constitutional deficiency was corrected by the Amendment and that after 1913, it had a legal right to claim a portion of income of every American in taxes.
Ever since the ratification of the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments after the Civil War, arguments were made that these amendments were not legally ratified, but nobody ever did enough research to conclusively prove this contention in court. When the Sixteenth Amendment came along, popular support for the amendment and the very light taxes imposed as a consequence of the amendment were sufficient to prevent similar arguments that this amendment was not ratified. It was only when the income tax burden became almost unbearable and tax enforcement and collection turned ruthless that for the first time in American history someone decided to actually research and investigate the question of whether a federal amendment had legally and really been ratified.

In 1984, Bill Benson, a former investigator for the Illinois Department of Revenue, made the historical decision to research the question of whether the Sixteenth Amendment was legally ratified. Taking the government’s list of States which purportedly adopted the amendment, Bill traveled to all 48 states in the Continental United States for the purpose of perusing Archives records to discover the story as to how each state acted upon the amendment.

In January and February 1984, Bill reviewed records in the New England states and discovered that, contrary to popular belief, these states had committed errors of such magnitude that they could not be counted as ratifying states. Buttressed by these amazing findings, he pushed onward through the remainder of the states, copying all official state documents that related to the ratification of the Amendment. By July 1984, Bill knew from the documents he possessed that the states had not legally ratified the amendment and that gross misconduct and fraud was involved.

In August 1984, Bill went to the National Archives in Washington, DC to find the federal government’s records of how this amendment allegedly was ratified. Once discovered in a dusty bin in a hidden place in the National Archives, he opened a book made, probably in 1913, that contained all these documents. In a few minutes of reading, Bill learned that not only was there documented evidence disclosing fraudulent ratification, but there was conclusive proof that government officials knew of the fraud in 1913.

When Bill completed the research of the last state necessary in December 1984, he knew that the tax structure of the United States was built upon a fraud. He knew that the second state which supposedly ratified the amendment, Kentucky, truly voted against the amendment, 9 votes for the ratification and 22 against. He knew that California both changed the wording of the amendment (an unlawful act) and failed to vote on the amendment. He knew that the government was aware that 11 states had unlawfully changed the wording of the amendment. Under these circumstances, these facts made the Sixteenth Amendment a fraud. Thus, Bill was compelled to tell this story to the American people through the publication of two books, The Law That Never Was, Volumes I & II.

Volume 1 contains a very detailed state by state analysis, complete with page references to official documents of how this amendment failed to be ratified. Volume II contains lengthy chapters explaining the law regarding ratification of amendments, and the story of various cases heard in federal court where concerned Americans presented this issue. These two books have become so important that copies of them have been presented to every U.S. Congressman and federal judge.

While today courts here in America hold that this issue is one which cannot be resolved in court (they obviously do not want to see the facts), it must be remembered that other important issues in the past, such as the civil rights movement, took many years to be resolved. But, it is certain that if enough Americans become aware of the fact that the Sixteenth Amendment was fraudulently ratified, a change in the federal tax structure will surely result.

Actually it has been resolved in the courts, because every time Benson's contentions have been used in a tax evasion case, the courts have found them to be anywhere between legally frivolous and downright fraudulent. Benson himself has served time for tax evasion.

That didn't stop him, however, from selling his “16th Amendment Reliance Defense Package” for $3500, helping other people also end up prison.

Thank you for this post. Hannan is indeed rightfully concerned about the state of things in America. From his view I would say he thinks there is a state of flux. A battle to be waged for what is right asd opposed to the manipulations of crafty and devious men and women.

It was, of course one Tom Paine, who was an Englishman to come out four square and support the American Revolution. A battle lies ahead. That battle will decide whether Americans can, if they wish, be allowed to pursue the American dream. For some, that dream may be a Norman Rockwell America- and why not?

For that kind of America was a kindly America. Sure, there were young people that rebelled against it. The fools try to destroy it, rather than most of them going off to some other country and trying that style of living .

The pursuit of the ordinary American may still be, finding a life's partner, having children and owning a nice home. Nothing wrong with that.

What we may be seeing is a complete repudiation of this kind of value. The wicked sycophants who deliberately encourage every kind of contradiction to the old fashioned life style, wallow in luxury themselves.

I hold it that if America falls, so will fall the English speaking people.

Stand fast conservatives.

Unfortunately I fear too many in th US think they are gonig to get something for nothing. And that something means a lot more than the freedom they take for granted....

Brings us to the, "big enough to give you everything, big enough to take it all away," sentiment. They're in the "take it all way" from the "wealthy" stage and the "takers" are too stupid and greedy to see what's in store for them (thank you public education and Dr. Spock).

They actually think these people "care" for them?! Once their usefulness is over they'll be forgotten. They better see who has their best interests at heart and join those ranks. Over the last few weeks the face of that side has been Sen. Scott Walker in Wisconsin.

I really enjoyed reading your post.

Thank you.

I felt right at home and was again reminded — we must fight the notion of apologizing for being Americans. The very thought is outrageous.

That’s how the minds of our youth have been corrupted and wasted. “Educators” have lowered the bar in schools and now they’re lowing the bar for what America and American is (and they have a lot of ready made citizens who fit that bill).

Obama does not represent the American brand.

People around the world who live under tyranny and who understand freedom, are watching and praying for us to vote in leaders who understand American exceptionalism, someone who will fan that flame so we will again be a beacon of hope.

On a side note, I really don’t like the word “deserve.” It is overused and few deserve. I prefer, “have the opportunity.”

The unions are marching in Madison again this weekend.

Public union tactics and motives are even more repulsive in light of the natural disaster and tragedy unfolding in Japan and being beamed around the world.

Leftist unions will continue to dig that hole. The msm will continue to cover it. Governors and legislators, trying to save their states, will push back hard on public unions. CA will travel their own path. The results will be instructive. Americans will vote for conservatives in 2012.

Maybe you need to research the issue as many Americans should in the national archives before you post a comment on this issue.I'm sure you will have a very eye opening experience.
