OK - given all of the recent news on pirates, Al-Qaeda, and Al-Shabab terrorist groups operating in the Horn Of Africa why would ANYONE in their right minds go sailing around Somalia without packing a little heat? Why would you even sail in that area? People with money can sometimes be the dumbest people in the world.

Maybe because it’s one of the most-travelled areas in the world? Or maybe because it’s the only reasonable way to get between the south Pacific and the Med. Thousands of vessels transit there every day.

The Somali pirates operate within several hundreds of miles of Somalia. Pretty much the whole western half of the Indian ocean. Saying that it’s “dumb” to go there ignores the plain reality that it’s nearly impossible to avoid them in that part of the world.

But yes... If it were me I’d be armed to the teeth, hopefully with something long range that could keep them out of RPG range until the cavalry could arrive.
