Castration Helps Reindeer Handle Climate Change
Newser ^ | 27 Jan 2010 | Kevin Spak

The indigenous Sami peoples in the Arctic have found a way to help reindeer survive the ravages of climate change—but we’re guessing the deer don’t like it too much. Fluctuating temperatures have been a challenge for the reindeer, because melting snow often refreezes and forms ice over the pastures they feed on. Sami researchers have found that castrating male reindeer allows them to more easily break the ice, in part because they keep their antlers later into winter.

It also makes the males more likely to share their food with calves that would otherwise starve to death. “To make herds more resilient in the future, we need to relearn the traditional knowledge of castration,” one professor tells Reuters. Specifically, they’re aiming for “half-castration,” which renders animals sterile, but able to produce testosterone. In Norway, where the law forbids castration without anesthetics, researchers are experimenting with an injection that could mimic the effects.

I'm sure that Al Gore's wife felt the same way just before she died.

These findings could suggest an approach for calming the nerves of AGW cult members in academia and the government.

Why can’t they just leave the damn reindeer alone? They have gotten on with it for hundreds of thousands of years, if not millions. Now they need the enviros to come along and interrupt their lives and decide whether they should reproduce. Animals adapt. By interfering with their reproductive abilities, they are interfering with adaptation and, ultimately, natural selection. This will not do the animals any good in the long run.

He said it’s only “half castration”... so I guess that’s not so bad.

Kinda like Whoopie’s “it wasn’t rape rape”.

Fluctuating temperatures have been a challenge for the reindeer, because melting snow often refreezes and forms ice over the pastures they feed on.
And this is new.

This is "climate change".

There's never been fluctuating temperatures before.

Fluctuating temperatures (aka weather) never existed before "climate change".

So we have a new designation: BW and AW.

Before Weather.

After Weather.

Weather began sometime in the second half of the 20th century.

Before that, there was no weather.
