Here are statements from Jim about the future of FreeRepublic.com for those who missed them. They are quite serious.
"Well, I can say that there are definitely two things that will never happen. 1) Banner ads. 2) Oracle [a completely new database system.] And a third is a total replacement [of the current damaged system.] Dont have the financial wherewithal."
"To those who wish to leave because of it, see ya."
"If FR dies, thats that."
Hey, you want us to get an all new system with all new software and add a few more pricey techs, system programmers and database administrators to keep it all working 100% of the time 24/7/365? Well, start coughing up the big bucks.
Its going to take tens of thousands of donations and many with at least three zeros each after the comma to accomplish the task. And that would be EVERY month like clock work to make the payroll. Once you take on a big load of expensive overhead, theres no going back. As it is, we get a couple thousand donations per quarter averaging about $30 bucks each and theres no guarantees we can cover this quarters expenses much less next quarter. Were on a pay as we go system and we have zero employees. We just ask for enough to pay the bills.
Throwing more money at the problem wont solve it. [This latest glitch] was a technical issue and we just had to keep troubleshooting until we found it. And no, were not going to invite a bunch of strangers in to get their hands on our secure systems. John has been programming since he was 14 and hes pushing 40 now. He built these systems and hes an expert in them.
And no, we are not going to throw out our software and rewrite it and no were not going to move on to some other database system. There are no guarantees that any other system can do a better job and not without hiring a staff to build and maintain it and thats for sure. And we dont have the financial wherewithal to do any of that anyway. Maybe if we had a couple million bucks at our disposal and a couple years to do it in we could build an iron-clad system. And maybe not.
All I can say is, if someone else can do it better and cheaper, then please step right on up and get er done!! Ill bow out and retire. Thankyouverymuch.
Hit it boys:
And no, we have no plans of taking FR commercial. I like it the way it is. Not sure I could handle getting rich.

Thank you, DrewsMum. Thank so much.
Thank you, DrewsMum.
Where’s a mod when you need one? Hey, mod, this guy is spewing anti-RINO rhetoric! And I’m about to hit the report abuse button.
What are you going to do about it? /s
Honestly, I don't know what insult you are referring to.
I was the Project Manager for bringing a Government Corporation from a 16 bit system to Oracle 8i and putting them on the web with a total interface that allowed people to register and manage their accounts on line.
In its place, Oracle is useful if you need a normalized database with quite a few bells and whistles. I do not think that the FR site requires a normalized database and that would only make things more expensive and a waste of time and precious money.
Now that's crazy talk. /s :-)
Already said I don’t and reason why is because a) I don’t feel like this is MY forum and b) I don’t like the conservative litmus test that you have to jump thru. Why would I donate and then get banned for posting my opinion that isn’t 100% agreed to by the higher ups? All you people that want people to go AWAY with differing opinions should be forking over more of their money. Not me.
Besides, posting here on a iPhone is a HUGE pain
You're on a roll! LOL
In fact, it MUCH more resembles a church.
Yes, I know.
And that is sort what I am talking about.
Those folks want to claim membership to FR, but they don’t financially contribute. All the begging in the world isn’t going to change that. All the threats of FR potentially going away next quarter isn’t going to change that...
Why do “they” have so much sway in the operations of this site?
Fleeting thought across my mind...do they remind you of anyone in our society now? Using resources and the expense of “the rich?”
My suggestion is to allow a newbie to sign up and participate for a probation period. At the end of the period they can have the option to subscribe to maintain privileges or go to read only.
Triangulate, Jim. Triangulate! LOL!
The post that I was responding to was about religion bashing and candidate bashing. Supporting Rinos will get you banned. I avoid the Religion forum. It’s a good place to get kicked and/or banned.
I sent a reply to him. Thanks
Laz, you’re so sexy when you get tough.
Been here since 1998. Just signed up for $15.00 per month.
I’m laughing at some of the complaints. *shaking head*
Thank you so much for a monthly donation, L2ZA!
Maybe a different color to the font of their handle, maybe a gold star, or a mini American flag icon next to your name. Maybe different colors for different levels of monthly donation amounts. Platinum stars for those giving over a hundred?
I believe that if the monthlies were easily identified, more people would proudly participate that way.
