ACLU challenges citizenship requirement for concealed weapons

South Dakota’s chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union filed a federal lawsuit against the state Monday hoping to open up the state’s concealed weapon law to all legal U.S. residents.

ACLU officials are seeking an injunction for a Sioux Falls man who was recently denied his concealed carry permit since he is not a U.S. citizen.

In 2002, the state Legislature amended the concealed weapons law by striking a clause that allowed legal residents to apply for permits. The law currently requires a person be a full U.S. citizen to receive a permit.

Amazing! This has to be the first time I’ve seen the ACLU involve itself in a firearms case. Too bad it’s for illegal aliens...... (surprise)

In a truly free country, all states would be “right-to-work” states. No one should be forced to join a union to get a job.

No - for legal residents - permanent residents of the US. Its interesting the ACLU is finding a Second Amendment case its willing to take.

This has the Brady Bunch upset to no end.

Heh

THE ACLU only wants foreign invaders to have guns

The ACLU’s official position is that the 2A does not refer to an individual right. However, the ACLU is not a monolithic organization, instead consisting of mostly autonomous state chapters. Some of these state chapters can do good things, and the Nevada chapter specifically has come out for the individual right.

When Delegate Saslaw (D) of Virginia, uber fascistic totalitarian minded oppressor "first class" sought to ban the gunrights of permanent resident aliens (legal immigrants) the ACLU was nowhere to be seen. His funny little friend Kent Willis, then the ACLU "boss" was likewise outtasight.

Hmm.

Something's happening in the Dakotas eh?

This may be a big "snooze".

Maybe they are aiming to lose this one.
It seems to me that a ruling blocking gun ownership for some large group would be more useful to them.
Otherwise, this makes very little sense, even in the upside down world of ACLU.

A “stopped clock” moment for the commies at the ACLU. I hope they win this one...

It’s more about the financial settlement they’re after.

Back in WWII the ACLU went to court on behalf of a couple of Japanese-Americans. Those were the test cases. You can readily find the entire court transcript. The ACLU had more than one lawyer on the case but one of them made arguments that seemed to be directed toward the idea of having the JA's lose!

So this is not a new thing with the ACLU. There are those who they would prefer to have imprisoned, or at least set up to engage in an "event" with the government.

ACLU?
Are these guys still around?

After such silence on the TSA matter - you know, civil liberty violations and all that? - I thought they had finally folded up tent and slunk back under their rock.

Surprise, surprise...

I can see both sides of this argument. The permanent resident in question should have been “grandfathered” and the citizenship requirement apply only to new permit applicants. Question: what about U.S. nationals who are not citizens? South Dakota also has open carry, so he could still carry openly, I think.

The national organization doesn’t support gun rights. Apparently the South Dakota chapter does. The national organization also doesn’t support Christians, but a few chapters have on their own successfully defended the rights of Christians (some I remember are a couple of street preachers and a personal Christian message in a high school yearbook).

Legal residents have the right to protect themselves and have followed our immigration laws, I’m Okay with this.

However, the ACLU is not a monolithic organization,

Correct, it is a communist organization, has been since day one and has never changed.

The stated purpose of the ACLU is to use America's legal system to promote it's communist agenda.

The founder {Baldwin} was an avowed communist, and the organization has never wavered from it's roots.

—yep—if someone has complied with the law as far as residency, leading to citizenship or permanent residency, I’m okay with it-—
