Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh Won't Run For Governor In 2012

ndiana Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh has decided against a run for governor in 2012, robbing Democrats of their top recruit in the Hoosier State.

"After careful consideration, I have concluded that the appropriate decision is not to be a candidate for governor of Indiana in 2012," Bayh said in a statement released to the Fix. ""The principle reason for my decision is the welfare of my twin sons."

Bayh's decision leaves the Democratic field wide open. Reps. Brad Ellsworth and Baron Hill, both of whom lost races this fall, are likely to consider the Bayh-less contest. Others mentioned include Rep. Joe Donnelly, Evansville Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel and former state House Speaker John Gregg.

The Republican field remains uncertain. Some believe that Rep. Mike Pence will be the GOP candidate although the House member seems to be far more interested in a run for president in 2012. If Pence doesn't run, Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman is a likely candidate.

I really think he is gearing to PRIMARY Obama. I can think of know other reason for his resignation, and now NOT running for Indiana Gov again, especially with a potentially weak Republican field!

The Family Bayh need to get the hell out of politics. They’ve already caused enough problems.

My thoughts also. Keeping his presidential option open.

No—I think the answer is much simpler. He wants to make some $$$$$$$$$$. That’s always the reason a promising politician doesn’t run for another office that seems ripe for the taking.

I for one am thankful that he wants to spend time with his twins. Good for him and good for the country.

Ever since Evan was just a drip of sap on Birchs twig, he’s been pruned and groomed to be President. Period.

Already has Gov on his resume. US Senator....check.

It’s the big boy chair or nothing now.

Bye bye bayh.

Good news for conservatives. Sure, Bayh means to hint that he may “primary” Obama, but he has no hope of winning. He hopes to highlight the folly of Obama’s extreme leftism, however, and that’s a good thing for America (and, long term, perhaps even for the off-the-rails Democrats).

Plus, if Bayh’s out of the Gov race, it makes it more likely that a conservative wins there next time.

I really think he is gearing to PRIMARY Obama...

Man In need to google taildragger/bayh/FR... I think I have been saying this for a year. He got out before the fit hit the shan in 08' he saw what was coming and is laying low to be the savior of the DNC and to be the anti-Hillary and Bamster Antidote.

And to top it off he has the fair haired boy look, we don't elect ugly CIC's anymore, for better or worse it is a likeability contest and looks play a part.

Evvie is a St. Albans man like Algore. Wash DC blood courses thru in his veins.

It would be devastating to his kids to have to take them back here to Indiana to live, LOL.

Why would Rep. Mike Pence decide to run for ‘12 POTUS and end up losing badly, during the GOP Primary and just like what happened to Duncan Hunter, Sr. during the ‘08 GOP Primary, instead of deciding to run for ‘12 Indiana Governor? Running for POTUS from the U.S. House of Representatives is a very bad decision, and past history shows this to be true!

His twins have to be close to college age as far as I can remember. If he wanted to spend time with them, then why was he first governor and then senator in their early years when they needed him? Methinks he is not being quite honest in that statement.
