Uproar Over ‘Mass Firings’ At Minn. Chipotle Restaurants
CBS Minnesota ^ | 9 Dec 2010 | Lindsey Seavert

Posted on 12/11/2010 2:36:45 PM PST by mandaladon

A Minnesota immigration rights group is protesting what it calls “mass firings” of Chipotle workers. According to the group, around 50 of the restaurant’s Latino workers have been fired in the last week.

The Minnesota Immigration Rights Action Committeee (MIRAC), a local group that fights for the legalization of undocumented workers, says employees at local Chipotle stores came forward, saying they were fired over questions about their immigration status.

“We started to piece together there was something larger going on than a few people fired at one store,” said MIRAC member Brad Sigal. “It appears to be a statewide attack on immigrant worker who are longtime employees most of them been working there for years.”

Brad Sigal says his group confirmed that more than a dozen workers at the Chipotle store on Grand Avenue in St. Paul were let go, along with nearly dozen more at a Richfield Chipotle. He also heard from fired employees at locations in downtown Minneapolis (Skyway and Seven Corners), Golden Valley, Coon Rapids, Stillwater and Hudson, Wis.

Sigal says he suspects it’s the result of a federal immigration audit.

“It is an I-9 audit,” said Sigal. “They check the paperwork and fire anyone who can’t immediately prove they have the right to work. An action like this on a mass scale before the holidays is not consistent with the image they have cultivated.”

In a statement, Chipotle said, “We are fully cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials in Minnesota in connection with a document request they have made.”

My guess is that these people are illegals, but it doesn't matter to these so called "immigration rights groups" they just want the law to be ignored.

A restaurant chain obeying immigration law is a crime.

So is it racist that they are being paid a nickel an hour or is it racist that we fired them from their nickel an hour jobs?

I’m confused.

Good guess.

It would be a crime if American teenagers could be employed working in fast food restaurants again.

There are plenty of legal immigrants (Mexican and otherwise) who would love to do those Chipotle jobs. The economy sucks for the poorer legal immigrant although many have latched onto welfare and other freebies such as free medical for their kids and subsidized housing

Chipotle is overpriced nonsense by the way. $6 for a burrito last time I was there

Laws are not images and vice versa but given that the Left supported Obama it's not surprising that they confuse the two.

These stories always remind me of Will Durant quotes.

It shouldn't be a statewide attack it should be a nationwide one.

"Immigrant workers"? Just call them criminal Mexicans. I know there are illegals here who aren't Mexican but to say Mexican would be correct a huge majority of the time.

Considering the insane leadership of our nation, at the current rates of illegal unchecked immigration and birth rates, the poplulation of the united states will be about 99% illegal alien latino within about ten years .

How dare chipotle try to impede manifest destiny

How do you know it’s a “nickel”? I know my Joo’ acquaintances who run stores here in the Fashion district of Los Angeles and they get paid in cash, way above the minimum wage.

Hey now, Chipotle burritos are awesome— but the company does need to follow immigration law, just like any other business.

Pretty damn good burrito though. Weighs in at about two pounds. Good for two meals for college kids.

Smart marketing, good locations, and low operating costs make Chipotle a good investment, both financial and culinary.

It’s racist that we are the bad guys for wanting our laws enforced.

“It appears to be a statewide attack on immigrant worker who are longtime employees most of them been working there for years.”

Attack ???

WTH does that mean?

Since when is a "audit" an attack?

The only thing I don't like about this is the fact the federal gov. is FINALLY getting serious about making companies compliant on I-9 paperwork yet does NOTHING about the open border.

I’ve seen it myself. That Iranian jew acquaintance of mine whom I picked up for dinner paid his employee by cash and the other one by personal check..

Both didnt want to accept it and they whispered something to him. They thought I was an undercover ICE agent so they thought I was going to arrest the mexicans. Had a great LOL over dinner about that with him.

“It would be a crime if American teenagers could be employed working in fast food restaurants again”
_________________________________________________________________________________________

To a franchise owner it IS a crime to hire an American teenager. They are specifically counseled NOT to. Not by the franchise, of course. But, don’t believe that those franchise owners don’t have an unofficial operating guideline and it doesn’t include hiring American kids.

I give Chick Fillet a pass, because the ONLY kids that I can ever detect that are real Americans are only at Chick Fillet. They are closed on Sundays too.

Thay have a soul.

Is Chipotle still owned by McDonalds?

I would expect this to happen across the country, if they are part of a national chain. Why only in The People’s Republic of Minnesota?
