Rare 'Declaration' Copy Sold In Boston For $380K
Broadside Copies Were Printed To Spread Word
UPDATED: 6:44 pm EST November 14, 2010
BOSTON -- A rare copy of the Declaration of Independence sold at auction in Boston Sunday for $380,000.
The rare historical document, a broadside, had originally belonged to the family prominent New Hampshire man who was a judge at the time the Declaration was signed in 1776.
Broadsides were large sheets of paper on which notices and proclamations were printed in the 18th century. They were intended to alert townspeople of important events and were posted in various meeting locations, usually churches.
After Thomas Jefferson completed the final draft of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, an estimated 200 copies of the document were printed on poster-sized sheets at the print shop of John Dunlap in Philadelphia, according to the National Archives.
Riders on horseback carried them throughout the colonies to spread the word.
"They were all eventually torn down and then thrown away. This is perhaps why these early documents are so rare," said Darlene Hollywood, a spokeswoman for Skinner Auctioneers, which conducted Sunday's auction.

The Declaration of Independence Carved In Wood
Charlie Kested, a 81-year-old Navy Veteran, has spent the last 10 years hand carving every single letter, word and line of the Declaration of Independence out of wood. The result is beautiful: dark walnut words, Baltic birch background and awe-inspiring patriotism.
The carving is huge, just as tall as Charlie Kested himself, and incredibly detailed, with fellow woodworkers calling it "museum quality" and "so precise you can't believe they were made by hand."
Kested suffered a stroke a year ago, which left him with no feeling in one hand, but he still wanted to finish his carving of the Declaration of Independence. And he's not stopping, his next project is carving the Gettysburg Address.

“Scare quotes” in headlines are something I don’t “get.”
Perhaps the author was subtly, sarcastically underscoring the current administrations’ desire to subjugate us all again.
[just a “wild ass guess”]....;]
What a legacy to leave the grandkids.
