Nancy Pelosi's core support strong despite loss
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 11/5/10 | Carolyn Lochhead, Chronicle Washington Bureau

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi maintained solid support among her core backers in the California delegation Thursday as she considered whether to run for minority leader or step down from the leadership, and probably leave Congress, after a devastating rout Tuesday that cost Democrats their majority.

Pelosi, 70, won re-election to the seat she has held in San Francisco since 1987 with 80 percent of the vote despite having mounted no campaign against a spirited and well-financed challenge at home by libertarian Republican John Dennis. Instead, she spent her colossal energy helping Democrats across the country.

Loyalty to Pelosi and admiration for her legislative skill remained as powerful as ever among liberals who blame President Obama for not being forceful enough. If she has rivals, they have not unmasked themselves. If any harbor ambitions to fill her place should she step aside, they have not said so, a telltale sign of her power.

Pelosi remained mum about her plans Thursday.

Now that's just dripping with irony even though none was intended.

"She could be anything she wants to be," said Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-Petaluma.

I'm doubtful she could become an honest person; the Botox is more than skin deep, she petrified her coscience and soul as well.

With more "Blue Dogs" and moderate Dems having been defeated than true lefties (though a few of them bit the dust, too), and the Dem Caucus as a consequence leaning even farther to the left, it should be an interesting show.

Pelosi probably has the votes to stay on as Minority Leader, if she wants the gig. But she'd have opposition, and it could get ugly. Ugly, in this case, would be fun. A circular firing squad, perhaps. The shrunken band of liberals is likely to get more bitter, more defiant, more noisy, and more irrelevant.

I agree, although she (thankfully) won't be as prominent.

And lucky for us that Dingy Harry Reid "won" his seat in NV. His is the face that Tea Partiers/conservatives/GOP must highlight every single day for the '12 elections. Play up his fraud in this election because we all know that that race was not kosher.

Election 2010 was great, but it was only a start. Tons of work remains to be done.

Game on!
