Devastation: GOP Picks Up 680 State Leg. Seats
NationalJournal ^ | 11/4/2010 | Jeremy P. Jacobs

While the Republican gains in the House and Senate are grabbing the most headlines, the most significant results on Tuesday came in state legislatures where Republicans wiped the floor with Democrats.

Republicans picked up 680 seats in state legislatures, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures -- the most in the modern era. To put that number in perspective: In the 1994 GOP wave, Republicans picked up 472 seats. The previous record was in the post-Watergate election of 1974, when Democrats picked up 628 seats.

The GOP gained majorities in at least 14 state house chambers. They now have unified control -- meaning both chambers -- of 26 state legislatures.

That control is a particularly bad sign for Democrats as they go into the redistricting process. If the GOP is effective in gerrymandering districts in many of these states, it could eventually lead to the GOP actually expanding its majority in 2012.

Republicans now hold the redistricting "trifecta" -- both chambers of the state legislature and the governorship -- in 15 states. They also control the Nebraska governorship and the unicameral legislature, taking the number up to 16. And in North Carolina -- probably the state most gerrymandered to benefit Democrats -- Republicans hold both chambers of the state legislature and the Democratic governor does not have veto power over redistricting proposals.

Here in NH, we went from 175 (out of 400) to almost 300. Plus the senate went from 14-10 Dems to about 19-5 Reps. Love it!

These state pick ups are outstanding and I tip my hat to the 40 states who participated. I want to apologize that California didn’t do its part. We tried, there are many of us Conservatives who understand the menacing elements of liberalism. On a per acre basis, Conservatives own more land than liberals. But on the coast, liberals dominate. Again, on behalf of California we regret that we couldn’t contribute to the Conservative wave.

Here it looks like we got the state House back, although a couple of races are still close. Didn’t get the Senate though.

As far as redistricting goes, I understand that a while back, California took the power to redistrict the state away from the Legislature.

Am I correct?

[I want to apologize that California didn’t do its part. ]

Add Nevada to the list of the doomed. The corrupt Dem machine under Harry Reid prevailed.

One of the first things they need to do is clean up the election process.

If the county level person fails to purge the dead or allows shenanigans with registrations to go on...criminally prosecute for malfeasance.

Then voter id's.

We deserve better than 3rd world elections.

I am not sure, but the redistricting map definitely benefits dems. Since they’ve controlled the legislature for ever my guess is that they either have legislative power or a commission they control.

I think one of the processes that would give conservatives a better chance to win elections is if voters were required to provide valid id’s to vote. I’ve had arguments w/voting places when they presume that I am who I say. I try to show my driver’s lic. and I’m told they don’t need to see it. Corruption is one of the problems in California.

CA did take redistricting away from the legislature. They tried to get it back on Tuesday but even foolish CA voters still said NO.

I don’t know about you but these remarkable pickups in other states makes Tuesday’s CA results that much more depressing.

YES!!! I’m almost more pumped about the gains in state legislatures than I am about the US Congress.

Nah.

NH is a funny state. The usual red-blue thing isn't so useful in understanding state politics.

The prime directive is "mind your own business". If a politician wants to know what those two guys up the road get into at night, we don't like that politician. Live and let live is what NH social views are all about.

The Republicans had a big socon push in 2004-2006, and it cost them badly.

But as soon as the RATs took over, the avalanche of regulations began.

This may be the only state where BOTH sexual relations and economic relations among consenting adults are not everybody's business.

The RATs came in as the Live free (love) or die party, but they soon outed themselves as total statist control freaks.

Und zo, they are history.

Let the GOP civil war begin!

To make a baseball analogy, the vast majority of the democrat party’s farm system got wiped out Tuesday!

That is all this means and it is HUGE!

All I can say is, you better do something with that control that demonstrates your conservatism.

The previous record was in the post-Watergate election of 1974, when Democrats picked up 628 seats.

For anyone who doesn't know, Nixon was a big government liberal.

"Noam Chomsky remarked that, in many respects, Nixon was "the last liberal president." Indeed, Nixon believed in using government wisely to benefit all and supported the idea of practical liberalism."
