PPP poll: Sarah Palin leads GOP field — among Republicans who say they’ve smoked pot

Who was it, remind me, who was ahead of the curve on this? Who was it who called on her to gently appeal to the legalization crowd weeks before she ended up dropping that mini-bombshell on Napolitano’s show about marijuana laws being overenforced?

C’mon. I have, like, three good ideas a year. Give a man some props.

Among Republicans who say they’ve smoked Marijuana:

Palin 25
Gingrich 22
Huckabee 17
Romney 17
Paul 8

Among Republicans who say they have not smoked Marijuana:

Huckabee 24
Romney 23
Gingrich 21
Palin 21
Paul 3

The sample size was only, er, 83 people, but even so, I’m intrigued to see her so far ahead of Ron Paul, whom you might think would have this particular market cornered. Either her brand as a western libertarian-ish type is stronger than we realized or pot-smoking is so mainstream even among Republicans that there’s no “fringe effect” when polling this particular demographic. When you sample a group of conservatives who’ve smoked weed, you end up with … a group of conservatives, not the pilots of the next “rEVOLution” blimp or whatever. Exit question: Which formerly lefty issue will a majority of the right embrace first, marijuana legalization or gay marriage?

Mostly keeping their heads down and trying to block the Democrats. The mood is so ugly right now that about anyone whose head bobs up in Washington or in political campaigns is likely to get it chopped off.

As far as that goes, the Republicans want the Democrats to get ALL the credit for what they have done, while the Democrats have been desperately trying to drag at least some of the Republicans in, so they can call it “bipartisan”, and maybe not get nuked so hard.

In any event, Palin’s strategy is a good one. Support conservatives first, then if there are no conservatives, support non-conservative Republicans, as the lesser of two evils. But she has had good luck so far, along with the Tea Party, in muscling out liberal Republicans in the primaries.

This could result in the best possibility: a Republican majority, with a very large and energetic conservative freshman class, and a much weakened senior moderate leadership, less able to push the conservatives around or marginalize them. Ideally, the conservatives will be so strong that they can create their own leadership, and retire some of the old “moderates” and yellow bellies.

... the fervent reactions began.

They came from an organization of families who lost loved ones on 9/11 and from House Republican Leader John Boehner. The Ohio representative's brief full statement on the president's stance is below:

The decision to build this mosque so close to Ground Zero is deeply troubling, as is the president’s decision to endorse it. The American people certainly don’t support it.

The fact that someone has the right to do something doesn’t necessarily make it the right thing to do. That is the essence of tolerance, peace and understanding. This is not an issue of law, whether religious freedom or local zoning. This is a basic issue of respect for a tragic moment in our history.

See, this is what I'm talking about -- "deeply troubling", like McCain's "reaching across the aisle", and Pansey Graham's gay sneers at the Tea Party patriots, and Ron Paul whining about the Federal Reserve, and Mitch McConnell swinging his jowls and salivating about his next opportunity to sell us out to his Chinese in-laws.

I'd love to see some conservative women drop-kick these RINO wusses to the curb, and then just hang the commie Democrats from meathooks, all on the first morning. Then after lunch ...

"Wouldn't be prudent," I guess.

Captain Queeg lost because he was a RINO and a terrible candidate that the left wing media picked for us. I dont think Palin was the reason he lost. However, I dont think Palin can win the presidency in 2012. Her future is as a reality TV star and talk show host, not a POTUS. We need someone more serious to carry the conservative banner in 2012.

I thought all of the “toke”n voters were black. So why is the Kenyan not included in this poll?

Looks like Sarah appeals to potheads, while Huckabee and Romney appeal to crackheads.

Exactly! I am just a few years older than Sarah (49) and I became a conservative after watching Carter nearly destroy this country.I suspect many in my generation did this including Sarah.I think most in my generation who are conservative think mostly that the government if it isn’t mentioned in the Constitution should stay out of it and allow the states to do whatever their majorities want.I truly think the war on drugs especially when it comes to pot has been an abject failure and a huge waste of money.Serouisly how to do stop a weed that will grow most anywhere? If the govenment did legalize and regulate it like alcohol it would probably stop 25% of the problems on the border and they could use the extra $$ to go after much more dangerous things like herion and coke that come across too.

This poll is laced with liberal slant...I've never smoked pot, and I'm for Palin.

It's funny that those who want to use pot as a deciding factor in polltaking are the very ones who vote "yes" to legalizing it.

Is the self-avowed libertarian leaning Sarah a pot smoker?

It was a serious question. I know more than a few successful folks who still toke on a semi-regular basis. In Alaska, the wild frontier, I would expect the % to be higher.

I truly have no idea but judging by the other women I know who have kids I’d say 95% of who did smoke them quit when the kids came, another 2-3% will on occassion when the kids are with a babysitter, and those with more
than 2 kids quit all together.Jus going by the folks I know?
