Ethical Woes Fog Democrat Hopes for November
Wall Street Journal Online ^ | Monday, August 2, 2010 | By NAFTALI BENDAVID And BRODY MULLINS

Posted on 08/02/2010 1:51:12 AM PDT by JohnHuang2

Two possible ethics trials of senior Democratic members of Congress are compounding the governing party's political woes and raising hopes among Republican leaders that they can make large gains in November's mid-term elections. On Sunday, Republicans sought to capitalize on the ethics troubles of Democratic Reps. Charles Rangel of New York and Maxine Waters of California. Continues...

After confidently predicting approximately a million times that Charles Rangel would cut a 'last-minute deal' with the House Ethics Committee, causing the whole story to slip into a memory hole, liberals are resigned to the fact that the Rangel ethics trial will go on, just before the fall elections. Exactly as the experts didn't predict.

In fact, Democrats involved in the party's communications operation -- known officially as the New York Times, AP, Politico.com, etc. -- are so resigned to a damaging televised trial (or trials -- see Maxine Waters), that they've resorted to using the race card.

One indication of the level of Democrat desperation about the fallout from public trials is how quickly after Rangel's ethics problems re-emerged that the media resorted to the race card -- in just under 10 seconds. A record even for the media.

In almost every article about Rangel or Maxine Waters, the "reporter" somehow feels compelled to point out that both are prominent members of the Congressional Black Caucus, and that 'racial questions are being raised' because the Ethics Committee isn't using a racial quota system in selecting whom to investigate.

Politico's John Bresnahan and Jonathan Allen, writing about the beastly racists running the Ethics Committee, conveniently quoted an anonymous member of the CBC complaining about a "duel standard, one for most members and one for African-Americans."

The Los Angeles Times put out a story Sunday entitled, "Ethics trials highlight racial tensions in Congress", reminding readers that Rangel and Waters "are leading MEMBERS OF THE CONGRESSIONAL BLACK CAUCUS."

The New York Times on Sunday noted that "the tenacity of Mr. Rangel, a 20-term (House) veteran, and Ms. Waters, in her 10th term, in fighting the accusations" by the cross-burning hooded bastards, "puts the interests of these two veteran MEMBERS OF THE CONGRESSIONAL BLACK CAUCUS at odds with those of their party leaders . . ."

Politico noted that "at one point earlier this year, all eight lawmakers under formal investigation by the House ethics committee, including Rangel and Waters, were black Democrats."

At the risk of stating the obvious, the media's darling little meme that black members of Congress are being 'unfairly' singled out is a ploy to get voters to dismiss the incriminating evidence in the Rangel and Waters cases as racially 'tainted' and, while they're at it, erect a firewall for white Democrats in swing districts. The message being, 'move along, nothing to see here but a buncha racist pigs making trumped-up charges, it's all a farce,' etc. And by falsely trying to turn the whole thing into an issue about race rather than ethics, the dog whistle campaign message from vulnerable white Democrats in swing districts to voters will be: Don't link me with this ethics morass, this whole thing is a black thing.

But it won't work. Voters know about a white dude named John Murtha, who would be facing charges right now if he wasn't deceased. Voters know about Eric Massa, another white dude who quit Congress because the "racist" Ethics Committee was going after him. Whether it's Eliot Spitzer or Blago or tax-cheat Tim Geithner, Democrats are one giant corruption factory; skin color is irrelevant.

Popcorn, anyone?

Anyway, that's...
My Two Cents...

Morning John,
I’m just hoping another Mark Foley b.s. type thing doesn’t surface for the pubbies. That would seem to blunt any opportunity.

It has nothing to do with race, and everything to do with both Rangel and Waters being from ‘safe’ racially-gerrymandered districts - so they feel they can get away with anything and still get re-elected.

These came up too early. I wish they would have been found in October. However if we can keep this in the news for four months that would be great. The Republicans in 2008 were in “trouble” in mid-September and October which helped the Democrats. Of course we could always have more Dems in trouble in October which would be great.

"so they feel they can get away with anything and still get re-elected"

This speaks volumes about their respective constituents.

Prediction: the 'Rats will trot out a campaign theme of "We're cleaning up Congress" and push the idea that they will go after ANYbody, Democrat or Republican that "abuses the public trust", citing Rangel and Waters as examples of that.

Look for them to show some old footage of Tom DeLay, Mark Foley, etc., and then show Rangel and Waters being brought up on ethics charges. "We're cleaning up our House" the ad will scream, "When will Republicans clean up THEIRS?"

Never mind that DeLay and Foley aren't even in the Congress, the electorate has a short memory and all they'll recognize is that Rangel and Waters were "caught" by their own and "held accountable".

It's just like Al Capone calling for 'clean government' in old Chicago.

The deal was cut.

The ethics Comittee offered to let him off with a reprimand, and he was too stupid to take the deal.

I think our herd was culled in prior elections. The best I’ve heard the other side come up with is Vitter...and that was years ago. lol
