U.S. News & World Report - Washington Whispers >
White House political strategists have concludedregretfullythat Ronald Reagan is fading and will have little chance of winning the Republican presidential nomination in 1980. Why the regrets? Because Carter's aides are convinced that the conservative, 68-year-old former California governor is an easy target. (April 2, 1979)

No kidding, I was there, and I remember how the elites sneered at Ronald Reagan, said he could never win, too extreme, a nut case, a cowboy. And not a serious thinker. All talk and no substance. Wouldn’t be able to hold his own in a debate past the first few sound bites. All summer and fall, the media thought election day 1980 would be close. (It wasn’t.)
The parallels this time are obvious. Who has that photo of Ron toasting Sarah?
Why do you think I put in the keyword: Palin!
History doesn’t necessarily repeats itself but it sure does rhymes!
Don’t underestimate her FR trolls!
Reagan served two full terms as governor of one of the most populous states (if not the most populous) and had years and years of national campaigning experience and exposure, professional and political.
Not saying anything derogatory about anyone on the scene now, but Reagan was uniquely positioned at the time as compared with anyone now.
I love that photo!
And then came the four words that changed everything. "There you go again"
He was also president of the Screen Actors Guild. Not a small executive position on his way up the ladder.
I take it the opposite way...despite Reagan serving two terms as Governor of one of the largest state...He was still counted out by MSM and liberals, mocked at and ridicule as a nut...but his political skills were great....political skills is what will separate one GOP candidate from the rest and Obama has no true political skills but more of a crash and burn attack towards others
And that twinkle in his eye. He had a deadly sense of humor and enjoyed himself using it. But never mean or snarky or arrogant.
And then came the four words that changed everything. “There you go again”
Remember the “make my day” remark while he held up the veto pen? Classic Reagan. God bless him.
add to that him telling the media I PAID FOR THIS MIKE when they tried to cut him off.....

I agree that the present occupant of the White House is totally unqualified, but still got there - but that’s water under the bridge.
I’m more interested in what it takes for a Republican to win the White House in 2012.

“Sarah Palin is my Dad in a skirt”.
Michael Reagan
You don’t say? LOL!
People should read the book “Rendezvous with Destiny” about the 1980 campaign to understand how uncertain Reagan’s nomination and election were. It wasn’t until the final weekend before the election that public sentiment swung decisively in Reagan’s favor.
Also remember that the revelation of W’s DUI in the last weekend probably cost him the pop. vote and nearly cost him the election in ‘00.
Preceded by the five words that helped him gain the nomination:
"I paid for this microphone!"
Reagan destroyed Carter in the 1980 debate by asking the American public one question.
“Are you better off now than you were four years ago?”
Carter was toast after that.
