New poll shows tie in the race for Texas governor

A new poll shows Gov. Rick Perry and Democratic challenger Bill White are tied in the race for Texas governor.

Public Policy Polling polled the race 4 months ago, in that poll, former Houston Mayor Bill White was trailing behind Perry 48-42. The new poll now shows that White is tied with Perry 43-43.

According to the poll only 36% of voters in the state like the job that Perry is doing while 49% disapprove.

White is better known and like than most challengers, 37% of voters have a favorable opinion of him, 25% unfavorable.

In most states, in this Republican election year, not only is the Republican leading among independents, but he is drawing more crossover support than the Democratic candidate. However, that is not the case with Bill White, as he did in February's poll, by garnering 15% of Texas Republicans to Perry's 10% of Democrats.

Both candidates have seen more of their own party's voters go into the undecided column, bringing their partisan support from the mid-80% range to the mid-70% range, with White still holding more of his own base than Perry does.

In almost every race in the country right now Republican voters are more unified around their candidates than Democrats are and independents are leaning toward the GOP. Texas is running against the national grain on both of those counts- White is winning 15% of Republicans while Perry gets just 10% of Democrats and White also has a 42-36 advantage with independent voters.

Republicans have held the Texas governorship since George W. Bush ousted the late Ann Richards 16 years ago.

Perry should be walking away with this. What’s up with that?

We shall see. I can’t imagine that Texas is going to have a Democratic Governor. I know that they have in the past, but this year? It seems unlikely. Of course a better candidate than Perry would have been better for Texas, but since this is what the state has...they will chose Perry.

Perry is not great, but I’ll take him over White any day! We have a chance to get some very good pro gun legislation through next term IF White loses. Good thing 2010 is a GOP year.

Four months ago it was Perry 48 - 43. The current poll is 43 -43. Perry has dropped but the bottom line White has increased by only 1. It’s way to early in this race to read much into this poll other than it represents what the people that were polled are saying at this stage.

The campaign hasn’t really begun outside of White making the rounds trying to become better known. Perry meets or speaks with groups but not much coverage except local at this stage. Wait till the campaign ads start running, debates are held and the electorate are focused on the race. Then we’ll know how things stand.

The voters really have very poor choices this time around, imo.

Rassmussen had Perry 48% to White 40% on Friday, June 18, 2010. Who is PPP anyways?

White is a sanctuary city RAT, hard left. Perry is not great, but given the choice, it’s not that hard - Perry will win.

Yes - I think it’s partially this as well as his silence on the Gulf oil spill situation, which will affect alot of businesses, in Houston especially. He’s been too busy “promoting Texas” in China for a couple of weeks.

With that said, I have no doubt he’ll win.

I don't know... I've been praying for a miracle so I don't have to vote for either one.

Rick Perry is as close to a John Edwards as you'll find in the Republican Party.

His views? Whatever you want them to be.

And his hair? Always perfect.

I wouldn't trust him farther than I can throw him. That said, I can't see him being in any real danger unless he gets caught siring an out-of-wedlock baby with a campaign videographer.
