Cyprus condemns Israeli actions

THE GOVERNMENT, political parties, NGOs and members of the public roundly condemned the killing of the humanitarian activists by the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) in international waters in the early hours of yesterday.

President Demetris Christofias condemned both the naval blockade of Gaza, which he said violated international law, and the attack. "The killing of people is condemnable for everyone and the killing of non combatants constitutes a criminal act,” he said.

“No one is happy, first of all with continuing blockade, which followed the attack against Gaza in December 2008 with its catastrophic results on Palestinians.”

The continuing of this blockade violates International Law and “challenges the human rights of each of us”, he added.

The Foreign Ministry instructed the Cypriot ambassador in Tel Aviv to seek information from Israeli authorities as to whether there were any Cypriot nationals aboard the flotilla.

At home, George Loucaides, an MP with ruling AKEL said the party “condemns in the strongest possible way this new Israeli atrocity" adding that "Israel is showing zero respect for human life and international law, killing activists in international waters."

Their strong condemnation was echoed by groups around the world, from the Elders to the European Commission and Parliament.

Cypriot MEP Kyriakos Triantafyllides, who was last week one of 40 activists barred from joining the flotilla by the Cyprus government also slammed the IDF's actions. "My first reaction is anger. I would never have imagined such a disproportionate use of violence could happen. The attacks were completely unfounded, and I have issued a statement to Brussels calling for an investigation and the immediate release of the activists."

Another Cypriot who could have been spending today hospitalised or imprisoned in Ashdod port today is Eleni Theocharis, also an MEP.

Theocharis took part in last year’s flotilla but turned down and invitation this year after learning that Turkish and Israeli intelligence staff had infiltrated the flotilla.

"I strongly contest this piracy as a terrorist act by the IDF in international waters. It is an example of state terrorism,” she said.

In many cases the anger and condemnation was mixed with feelings of concern for surviving activists' welfare. Athena Kariati, Youth against Nationalism Spokeswoman said "We were angry about Cyprus' decision to stop people joining the flotilla... but there are people we know who did go, from Greece and the rest of Europe and we are very worried."

The Cyprus Mail has learned that one man from Cyprus, Denis Healy, was captaining one of the flotilla’s ships, called Challenger. Reports were unavailable, as all satellite communications had been blocked, allegedly by the IDF.

Youth Against Nationalism organised one of two protests in Nicosia last night to protest against the event. Joining the protest were various groups and members of the public: Workers Democracy, KISA, Anthropi Magazine, Palestinian, Kurdish and two Turkish Cypriot groups.

The Israeli Embassy in Nicosia yesterday defended Tel Aviv’s actions saying that it regretted the loss of life, but reasserted the legitimacy of its lethally enforced blockade by referring to Hamas rocket attacks on Israel.

Regarding the shooting of up to 20 activists and injury of many more by IDF commandos, the statement said: "The Israeli Navy was met with violent opposition, and numerous Israeli personnel were injured."

Asked about decision to board the ships in international waters, and within Cyprus' Flight Information Region, Ravit Baer said "This was within the acceptable range of the military blockade, and if the helicopters were flying below 500 feet then it is okay."

Baer denied that there was any humanitarian crisis in Gaza, but conceded that it is a "Miserable situation". "It is a miserable situation in Africa too, but you don't see boats going there."

Several questions remain unanswered about what really happened yesterday, and the EU has called for a full investigation. For example, there is a discrepancy between the reports of activists, who say the IDF commandos came aboard shooting, and the IDF who claim that "demonstrators onboard attacked the IDF Naval personnel with live fire and light weaponry including knives and clubs."

Six ships boarded, only one resisted.  That's what Al Jazeera says.

Of the 682 people from 42 countries aboard the six ships that were raided, 380 are believed to be Turkish.

The unmistakable fact is, Israel did not go in guns blazing.  Five ships were boarded without incident.  Only one ship had a crew intent on resisting Israeli commandos.

This was premeditated, and Israel had no choice.

Cyprus decided not to help run the blockade. Smart. Now they’re complaining about Israel, but they know Israel was right.

Sorry, but wasn’t Cyprus a major terrorist breeding ground not so many years ago?

Somehow I don’t think things have changed much.

Isn’t Cyprus still partitioned, and occupied by UN ‘peacekeepers’??

Pot-kettle-black....

You may be right. I know there were problems there, with both Cyprus and Turkey vying for control.

Cyprus rules two thirds of the island and Turkey rules one third.

Around 1974, this arrangement came into being, and I’m sure there was strife surrounding this settlement which probably involved terrorist activity.

In contemporary times, I don’t think it’s been a hot bed of problems. In fact, I think it’s been quite stable and non-problematic since the 74 time frame.

Perhaps someone else has a better handle on it than I though.

U.N.? That’s possible. The U.N. never actually accomplishes anything. It just stands between two parties allowing them to make war if they want.

Witness Southern Lebanon.

If they left the Kosovo Serbia region, it would cave in on itself.

The U.N. is essentially worthless.

BTW, Cyprus rules 2/3rds of the island and Turkey rules 1/3rd.

It’s ironic that Greek Cyprus is taking the side of their own muslim separatists on this issue!

I thought Greeks didn't like Turks. I guess they dislike Jews even more.

I didn't know they had an ambassador to Israel. I thought they were still ticked off about that Chanukkah thing.

Cyprus is a member state of the EU, including the Turkish part, even though the Turkish separatists are not recognized by any EU state! The EU has followed Russia’s lead and demanded an “inquiry” and an end to the Gaza blockade.

International Reaction to the Israeli Raid - Greece: Prime Minister George Papandreou condemned the military intervention. The government suspended a military exercise with Israel and postponed a visit by Israel's air force chief.

The E.U. not so much, but the U.K. should know better. The E.U. is a befuddled state of idiots for the most part. (IMO)

There’s video of this for heaven’s sake. It’s plain as day what took place. How do you not see this, except as others have stated, deep seated Antisemitism?

Thanks for clarifying the Cyprus E.U. situation.

Israeli raid on aid ships rocks Greek relations - June 1, 2010 - The raids on the ships were condemned by all the Greek parties. New Democracy called it “an unprovoked attack” that contravened international law. The Communist Party said that the incident was evidence of “the heightened imperialist aggressiveness, not only against the Palestinian people but all the peoples in the area.” The Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) labeled Israel’s actions “piracy” and “an international crime.” The Popular Orthodox Rally (LAOS) accused Israel of “becoming increasingly violent” and undermining its own cause. The government withdrew from a joint air force exercise with Israel, code-named Minoas 2010, which started in Crete last Tuesday and was due to end this Thursday. It also canceled a visit due to take place today by the Israeli air force chief. Israel’s ambassador in Athens, Ali Yahya, was summoned by Alternate Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas to give explanations about the incident. “We cannot justify the use of violence of such force; we condemn it,” said Droutsas.

The flag of Cyprus has a picture of Cyprus on it. The message is that the EU member Greek Cyprus is the whole Cyprus and the only Cyprus, and its borders can be seen right on its flag. Same reason Kosovo put a picture of Kosovo on their flag. The EU has its own EU peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, EULEX. If NATO pulls out of Kosovo, the EU will take over like they did in Bosnia.
