A huge wealth gap has opened up between black and white people in the US over the past quarter of a century – a difference sufficient to put two children through university – because of racial discrimination and economic policies that favour the affluent.
A typical white family is now five times richer than its African-American counterpart of the same class, according to a report released today by Brandeis University in Massachusetts.
White families typically have assets worth $100,000 (£69,000), up from $22,000 in the mid-1980s. African-American families' assets stand at just $5,000, up from around $2,000.
A quarter of black families have no assets at all. The study monitored more than 2,000 families since 1984.

Then there is the possibility that the authors of the Bell Curve are right. Even middle-class blacks do not in general match other groups in academic achievement. Maybe the same genes that make blacks the fastest runners —and arguably also the slowest—work to reduce the intellectual ability
of black students. But it is not just a black-white thing. Appalachian whites do no betters on standardized tests than blacks.

In spite of decades of racial profiling against whites in admissions, employment and promotion and trillions of dollars in transfer payments (read: wealth distribution) here’s the same old tired excuses. Nothing about cultureal differences, nothing about values, nothing about work ethic, nothing about flawed behavior patterns. Nothing about bad political choices. It’s always an excuse.

If they could show that a black with an equivalent social/education background made 5 times less , or a white with the comparable lack of education made 5 times more, then their social/economic equivalent in the other race, they might have a point.
But they cannot because no such facts exist. Not making dumb choices early in life, higher education, competency at basic social skills and hard work still count far more then race, ethnicity or social economic background in the USA when it comes to success.
I know a high school physics teacher in Charleston, WV who actually thought one could "catch gay" from casual contact with a homosexual. Maybe this sort of thing is part of the problem too.
Yep. Aside from the obvious advantage of two incomes, or at least the presence of one parent in the home while another works, saving on 'child care', a stable marriage is conducive to the accumulation of assets, real and otherwise. It makes it possible to buy instead of rent, to maintain the property better, to take advantage of sales, etc., all of which translate into getting more for the dollar spent, and free up money to be invested or accumulated.
The interdependence of a decent relationship establishes standards which cause people to achieve more.
Most of the problems of the black community appear to have cultural roots, and that culture has changed significantly since the start of the War on Poverty. People who were itching for a chance to compete in the workplace and academia with their counterparts of other races often lost drive, and I place the blame on the Socialist ("New Left") inroads made in the black community during what they might call the 'Civil Rights Era' of the 1960s. The whole concept of 'being owed' really gained visible traction then.
Prior to that, even under Jim Crow, there were somewhat parallel cultures, businesses, and even universities, and achievement was stressed by many black parents (and still is by those who did not buy into the Socialist's meme.).
Delay self gratification. - Don’t buy a new car until you can pay in cash, etc.
As far as Appalachia, part of the problem is that even if they do get an education, there’s nowhere to USE that education unless they move far from home. Kind of a vicious circle.

As much as it irks me to fund do-nothings, the fact remains that someone on welfare may “skate” today, but the long-term effect is that they and their children are becoming more and more locked into poverty.
You can’t get “promoted” within the welfare system. You can’t get a new “job” within the welfare system. You take the money — which is big money for doing nothing, but a pittance in terms of being able to *accumulate wealth* — and that is it.
I do wonder if blacks have a genetic predisposition to flock to Communism.
Basically though, whites are richer because blacks don’t have as much money.
I’ve lived in the UK all my life. This 5 to 1 ratio is simply not the case. It wouldn’t be a problem if it was, but it is just not true. Now: 2 to 1, I could believe.
And the reason is illuminating: the toxic loser-culture that pervades the ‘African-American’ experience is much less of a factor in Britain: our Jamaican, Sierra-Leonian and other African-extraction citizens do not have such colossal chips on their shoulders. Or perhaps they don’t form 10% of the population and therefore don’t form such a powerful entitlement group - I don’t know.
We have other problems: and our entitlement underclass has its own demographic profile. We call it ‘Scotland’. But this self-selecting angry black underclass that refuses opportunity - that’s a uniquely American pathology.
Also: the mere existence of a political “Black Caucus” in the US political system - that’s a dynamic that just isn’t found in Britain.

Agreed. All generalization aside, there are black families who strive for excellence, who achieve and expect the same of their children, and who would be greatly demeaned by ever having to accept welfare.
It is an apples to oranges comparison. A much larger population of whites is going to consist of a much larger number of both richer and poorer people then the average black.
