Only hours after Cook County sheriff's officials agreed to join an investigation into the theft of nearly two dozen weapons belonging to south suburban Harvey police, they pulled out. The sheriff's department had joined on the sole condition that its investigation be independent of that of Harvey police, a sheriff's spokesman said, but Harvey officials weren't cooperating.
Sheriff Tom Dart has been critical of Harvey's internal operations and his department was part of a task force that raided Harvey's police station in January 2007, seizing evidence from unsolved crimes. Investigators from state police and the state's attorney's office subsequently filed murder and attempted murder charges using the seized evidence.
The stolen weapons, including high-powered assault rifles, were taken from a shooting range belonging to Harvey police, prompting a statewide alert this week.

Harvey is a dung hole populated by Obama’s core constituency and the Hell’s Angels corporate headquarters.
Wow, a trailer in a secluded location.
Sounds real secure. [/S]
I’m sure it was in inside job. Harvey police have a history of being involved with gangs. And I remember reading news stories years ago about Harvey cops/gangsters being involved in a shootout with rival Harvey cops/gangsters. Many South Suburban communities have local governments and police departments that are corrupt to the core.
Are AR-15s even assault rifles? I think not, they are a derivative to be sure, but not full auto.
Color me shocked. These weapons are already in the hands of some crack dealing gangbangers in Chicago.
WHAT kind of a world do we live in where one crooked police department would interfere with an investigation of it by another crooked police department?
I guess the cops may have installed an automatic sear.
Certainly sounds like an inside job.
Leave a cache of weapons at an unsecured location not equipped to store weapons and surprise, surprise they come up missing.
Who ever signed out those weapons from the weapons master should be investigated and be sent up for as long as possible.
The weapons master needs to be investigated as well. He did not report the weapons not returned. If he was ok with the weapons being stored in that trailer he needs to be locked up as well.
No. They are not.
The AR-15 is a semi-automatic, .223 caliber rifles; very much the same as the semi-automatic, .223 caliber rifles used by small game hunters all over the country. In fact, some people hunt small game with AR-15s.
On a side note, in Virginia it is illegal to hunt deer with an AR-15, or any weapon of a claiber smaller than 0.23. The Commonwealth has determined that anything as small as .223 is not powerful enough to allow for consistent, clean, humane, one-shot kills of animals the size of a deer.
Speaking of undersized bullets, I am going to Alaska over Memorial day and am bringing my handgun in case of a big game attack on my rental car. It is a Walther P99 in .40 cal., so feel free to say a little prayer for me!
But, our boys have had to take that ‘not powerful enough cartridge to war since 1965? Amazing, the gub’ment says it inhumane to kill dear with a 223, but our sons & daughters are strapped with it! Take a deep breath, you can almost smell the hypocracy!
That’s what I thought. It is usually safe to assume that media types have no clue what they are talking about in regards to firearms. They do love to use that term.

This sounds like an excellent excuse for YOU to purchase a new gun. Might I recommend a nice Ruger Super Redhawk, chambered in .454 Casull? Of course, you’ll probably need to hire a “bearer” to carry it for you!
;-)
My .40 cal is only gonna make a big animal mad at me.
If not, maybe I should move there and open some.
Get a .44 Mag at the least, and I emphasize least. Unfortunately, the bigger stuff is hard to get these days and will command a premium price or some diligence to locate. The snubby Super-Redhawk in .454 Casull is a nice choice, if you can get one.
