Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is speaking out against the new hard-line immigration law in Arizona, becoming the first prominent national Republican to do so.
"I think it creates unintended consequences," he said in a telephone interview with POLITICO Tuesday. "It's difficult for me to imagine how you're going to enforce this law. It places a significant burden on local law enforcement and you have civil liberties issues that are significant as well."
The measure, signed into law last Friday, would require police to check the immigration status of any individuals they reasonably suspect are illegal immigrants and arrest them if they can't prove legal status.
Bush said he understood the anger that prompted the bill, but that immigration should remain a federal issue.

We don't need any more laws. The law is already on the books & should be implemented!
Arizona's law is just like the Federal law.
Thanks. Rubio is a fraud. Crist sucks too but Rubio is a sneak.
“Exactly. Under this law, EVERYBODY would have to carry papers.”
Explain to me why a person that was stopped for a traffic violation and suspected of being in the country illegally could not be verified as a legal citizen by using the E-Verify system.
About a year ago, the state of Indiana use the E-Verify system to find mismatches between names and SS numbers on drivers licenses. If they did not match, you had thirty days to correct it or your license was suspended.
Like you, I don’t want to see citizens having to carry papers to prove they are here legally, but I think there are other ways to identify illegal aliens vs. legal citizens.
You are putting up obstacles that don't exist.
This tells me you are either illegally here or have friends or relatives who are here illegally.
If the Feds were doing their job, it’d be no problem for Arizona.
I have NEVER seen such dishonest reporting. THEY CAN’T STOP PEOPLE JUST FOR THEIR RACE. But if they have stopped someone for something else, then they MUST ask. What is so F**KING hard to understand.
Duncan Hunter in an interview: “DH: In other words they made state law on illegal aliens consistent with federal law! Good. “
OH MY GOD...For the last time, THEY CAN'T STOP PEOPLE AND ASK THEM ANYTHING. But if someone is stopped for something, let's say DUI, THEN they have to ask. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT. The fact that people here don't understand this SIMPLE SIMPLE law, really scares me.
As Florida’s governor he was useless about the illegal invasion.
I'm not sure what's going on here with all of these flat-out idiotic comments!! I feel like I fell into a Marxist fearmongering Web site.
People who don't even live in AZ and have no clue what goes on here, not to mention haven't read the bill, I wish they'd just stop talking before spreading more rumors and lies. They are playing right into the Communist hands.
We need ID just to buy certain cold medicine in AZ, thanks to the REAL police state — the one that harasses law-abiding American citizens but turns a blind eye to all of the meth-making criminals.
And let’s not forget about the red light and speed cameras, out-of-state or country plates? Off the hook.
You got that right. And it keeps being repeated. I almost threw my shoe at the TV when Shep Smith was repeating the lie that police can stop anyone. IT’S A LIE.
No kidding, calex, I agree with you!
stuartcr ---- If you don't have your ID (driver's license, alien registration card, whatever) with you, you will not be deported overnight, give me a break. I haven't heard such a blatant apologist for the illegal alien lobby in awhile, especially on FR.
I had to turn that POS off when he first came on, my blood pressure can seriously not handle it. All of those lying talking heads, speaking with such “authority.”
Had to go to a McDonald’s today to pick up lunch for some folks; the Quizno’s suddenly shut down, hope it didn’t go out of business. Anyway, the place was packed full of non-English speakers and no one looked scared to me. They must not have gotten the memo from Shep and all the rest of the liars ...
Thank goodness Laura I. is telling off the latest pro-illegal liar right now....

They are supporting the established GOP leadership...Steele, MCain (no matter what he says today!), Graham, the Bushes.
Frightening when more liberals/Democrats (and A LOT do, it’s that 70% issue across the board, as you know) support this bill than it appears some do here, on certain threads.
Of course it's a lie. That's the plan. They are deliberately demagoguing the issue and have no intention of discussing it truthfully. The elitist political/media/academic classes are at war with the rest of us, and they intend to enforce their vision upon us, by whatever means it takes.
They mean to rule well, but they mean to rule. After all, it's their moment...
The problem is that this legislation seems to be directed entirely at Hispanic immigrants. On the grand scale of things, we’ve had much more trouble from illegal Middle Easterners (think 9/11), illegal Africans (think Obama) and huge numbers of illegal Chinese who, aside from the ones to whom Bill Clinton was funneling our secrets, contribute heavily to the crime problem in cities where they have a large presence.
The Arizona law is not being presented as an attempt to control illegal immigration (from anywhere, since AZ is the gateway for people smuggling) but as an attempt to attack Hispanics. That has got to be corrected.
One of Jeb’s huge shortcomings! Immigration & amnesty!
