Tickets get costlier as movie chains seek to cash in on consumers' willingness to pay more for 3-D

Major U.S. movie-theater chains, seeking to accelerate the surge in revenues fueled by such 3-D hits as "Avatar" and "Alice in Wonderland," are imposing some of the steepest increases in ticket prices in at least a decade.

The new prices take effect Friday in many markets across the country in theaters owned by such major exhibitors as Regal Entertainment Group, Cinemark Holdings Inc. and AMC Entertainment Inc.

The increases, in one case as much as 26%, vary from theater to theater, but many cinemas are raising prices most—or even solely—for 3-D showings, which accounted for the vast majority of last year's 10% jump in domestic box-office sales. 3-D movies generated 11% of domestic ticket sales in 2009, up from just 2% in 2008.

So the three largest theater chains raised their prices at the exact same time.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that glaring evidence of price collusion? Or do movie theaters enjoy an antitrust exemption I'm not aware of?

Over the last decade I’ve been averaging about 1 movie theater viewing per year. I think I’ll let that lapse to zero.

They think the American people are stupid fools and will sheepishly line up to be indocrinated by the fascist/commie/socialist/ hollywood movies.

Maybe everyone should take a personal oath to NOT support these people in H-wood.

They know that at least 46% of the American people are in fact stupid enough to do just that.

I haven't had the duped feeling, although I did have the fleeced feeling...one ticket, popcorn and a soda set one back quite a penny these days.

Now I realize Hollywood isn't going to much care about losing me as a customer because I'm not a huge consumer of their crap, but enough people like me add up.

I haven’t been to a theater since Seabiscuit came out.

They can raise it to $50 a pop fo al I care, I have no intention of paying for all of those liberal Hollywood “stars” to live their life style.

Turn off the liberal stations. Don’t go to liberal movies. No need with the internet.

Same with us. We switched to Netflix a couple of years ago and have access to about a hundred thousand videos, many of which we are able to watch on laptops at no extra charge to our account. But for $16 a month, we have three videos coming and going all the time. Right now, we have a list of 90 videos in our DVD queue, and 84 in our instant watch queue. We enjoy BBC series. They’re well written, no trashy violence or sex. Just good stories. And we like the tried and true classics of Jane Austen. Those videos are always being redone with new stars. The Hollywood stars have become arrogant political ranters. IMO

Well, I haven't been inside a movie theatre since "Top Gun" was released back in the 80's...so I doubt this will be of any consequence to me.

Besides, I saw "Creature from the Black Lagoon" in 3D back when I was a kid...in the 50's.

Like everything else in hollywood, 3D is a redeux.

Laughing out loud over here, thanks. I average one or two a year also. No need to support all the Jim Cameron-type communists out there.

If the theaters raise their prices to high people will wait and rent the 3D movies and watch them on their new 3D TVs

Yeah, I started with Netflix before many people knew about it yet. Highly recommend to others.

I just bought an el cheapo blu-ray player from Amazon. Blu-rays rent for a dollar around here so I don’t think I’ll be going to the theater anymore. Movie watching is better at home.

Gee..do movies cost more than a dime now? Thats what it was the last time I went to see one of their left wing propaganda offerings. IOW who cares? Just say, “NO”!

I was thinking that myself.

I usually watch 3D movies at the local IMAX, which is at the state-subsidized kids museum. I’ll be interested to see if they raise their prices as well.
