There is a fundamental right being denied 55% of all Americans. This denial costs over 16,000 lives per year, meaning more than 44 of our fellow Americans will die every day that we delay. What should be done in light of these shocking figures?
Using the example set by President Obama and the Congressional Democrats, there is only one answer: Universal Gun Care for every American. Surely a right outlined in the Bill of Rights (2d Amendment) is just as important as a right NOT found the Constitution (Health Care).
Bonus, it should be easier to implement. After all, gun dealers and manufacturers are ready and willing to help solve the problem. Unlike the evil insurance companies, gun dealers don't want to take your weapon away from you when you most need it. Nor will they deny selling you a weapon simply because you haven't purchased one in the past (i.e. a pre-existing condition).
Conventional estimates state that 45% of all US households own a firearm. This leaves at least 55% of all Americans "uncovered." In 2008 there were 16,272 murders in the USA. How many of those could have been prevented if the victims had been able to protect themselves?
My proposal is a modest one:
Mandate for every American to purchase a gun or be provided one by their employer (children under the age of 26 can share a weapon with their parents) Tax credits to offset the cost of purchase (for those making less than $250,000 per year and everyone in Nebraska) For those that can't afford it, a grant or subsidy to purchase a weapon (union members can get two weapons subsidized before 2018) Funding for a series of community based gun dealers/clinics and firing ranges (especially in under-served urban

LOL! Also up to about 1903, militia aged men were required to have a gun and ammo (though where they were to get it was not specified).
Great point!!! I often wonder what the campus in Virgina that day would have been like if the teacher had a gun.
I'm all for gun rights but I'll be darned if I'll support a mandate that all libs have one........that just scarey!
I am the first FReeper to declare the universal right to quality sex care. Sex is a basic human need, much like food and health care.
We are a rich nation. How can we deny the sexually deprived this basic human need? It’s not my fault I was born less handsome. Can I help it if I came up short in life’s lottery?
No! The beautiful and sexy people have an unfair advantage. For them, quality sex care is easily obtained. Average people are unfairly disadvantaged. Therefore, let the IRS collect a Beauty Surcharge, the proceeds of which can go to pay for quality sex care for the rest of us.
Like Gun Care, sex is a fundamental human right. If we are too poor or too ugly to obtain it on our own, it’s only fair that government provide it.
I know some of you will say Quality Sex Care is unconstitutional. Not so! The 16th Amendment gives government the right to confiscate income in any manner it sees fit. The General Welfare Clause gives government the mandate to provide for...well...general welfare. What’s more basic to general welfare than good sex?
Congress recently passed government health care. Bravo! Now we have the right to Viagra. However, I submit it’s cruel and unusual punishment (a violation of the US Constitution) to provide Viagra without also providing the means to use it.
Therefore, my fellow FReepers, join with me today to demand our right to quality sex care. Call your congressman now!
That is miniscule compared to the number senior Americans who will die each year from denied treatment. The criminals/gang/collectivists/statists/totalitarians win again. Our money, our guns, our life. All is at risk.
(...and I didn't even mention those Americans killed in the womb by the likes of B.S. - Baby-Stabbing Stupak.)
Do you see the picture M. Allen Fritsch?
Jack Vance and J. Neil Schulman have written science fiction novels with this theme.
So, if you already own many guns but not a government mandated one, do you still qualify for some type of government subsidy to buy another one?
Be careful what you wish for. I'm not sure you'd like government-provided sex. Although it looks like they'll definitely be bending us over in the near future.
This puts the healthcare reform in a good light. I think we should all be for universal gun ownership.
I'm sure that's what the Founding Fathers had in mind when they referred to "unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
There I was still waiting to see how Zeros broadband plan will gimme my "right" to (I want it "FREE!!" like all the money they are printing) internet access.
PS. Goobermint provided sex service? I'm too scared to even think of what they would send you!
There was a charity formed in Columbus Ohio at one point called “Arm the Homeless.” They were to take donations and use those donations to distribute free handguns to homeless people and others who couldn’t afford to buy a gun. It ended up being a hoax of course.
They bring up a good point though. You have the right to a defense attorney if you are accused of a crime. Since it is a basic Constitutional right, the government must provide an attorney if you can’t afford one. Since owning a gun is a basic Constitutional right, the government should be required to provide firearms to those who are too poor to afford to purchase their own.
And since the Constitution applies to illegal immigrants when they are here, should they be provided with firearms too? :shudder:
I think you are right HT, this position should be rethought.

Yeah, I know. Very good satire...although my disgust for these totalitarians...clouds my ability to appreciate any satire these days.
Thanks much Old Teuful Hunden.
Did you mean it THAT way?
As long as we’re going to have tax credits for firearms, they should be good ones, so we can afford Ed Browns and LWRCs. :)
I’d say there should be a limit, 15 guns per person. If you already own say, 7 or so, you should be paid an amount equal to the cost of those seven and then given vouchers for 8 more. Price should be set at about $700 per gun, if you want to buy a more expensive weapon then you have to settle for fewer weapons. Your choice:)
