Ike Skelton (D), HASC Chairman, admits Obamacare doesn't protect servicemembers, families

Skelton to Introduce Legislation to Protect TRICARE

Washington, D.C.—Today, House Armed Services Committee Chairman Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) released the statement below regarding his intent to introduce legislation to explicitly state in law that TRICARE and the DOD nonappropriated fund (NAF) health plans meet all of the health care requirements currently under consideration by Congress for individual health insurance. These programs provide health coverage to members of the military and their families, military retirees and their families, and employees of U.S. military post/base exchanges and other nonappropriated fund activities.

“Our nation’s military provides us with first-class protection, and it is our obligation to provide them—and their families—with first-class health care in return. While some of this Committee’s members may disagree on overall health care reform, we are united in our commitment to ensuring that any measure signed into law will not have any unintended consequences that adversely impact the military health care programs for our men and women in uniform and their families.

“Although the health care legislation passed by the House explicitly exempted TRICARE from being affected, the Senate bill did not. Unfortunately, the parliamentary rules of the reconciliation process did not allow for the inclusion of language that specifically protects these programs. To reassure our nation’s service members and their families that their health coverage will remain unaffected by this, I will introduce legislation this week to explicitly state that TRICARE and the NAF health plans meet all requirements for individual health insurance; this language will also be included in this year’s national defense authorization bill.”

My wife (Former Military Chick) has made dozens of calls to congressional offices and elsewhere and has received numerous assurances this obamacare wouldn't directly effect the healthcare of servicemembers, veterans, or their families. Now the truth slips out.

Does it surprise anyone that we can add one more lie to those being told about this abomination? Does it surprise anyone that it came out less than 48 hours before they'll vote on it?

PING

Friends this is late, really LATE in the game, but it seams all my calls were met with dishonesty, I am a military wife, who has served our country in the AF, with family that is retired, to read what Skelton has said, whom I detest, this press release shows the dishonesty that the dems will go to, to the very end to pass Obamacare and NOW those who sacrifice and their families will be screwed by HCR.

Please pass this along, there is a protest in DC tomorrow, folks need to know this to make their voice known, as the vote is being done on the weekend where our calls will be ignored.

Thank you, for all those who will make sure the voice of our bravest and their families will NOT be ignored.

Holy C$$$!!! I have been exposed to Ike and the Skelton family since the early 80s. I truly believed Ike’s No vote on obabacare was because he had cover. After this, I can’t help but think that he is sincere.

I tried to get through to Skelton’s DC office yesterday and today, but to no avail. I was under the impression he did not support the current health care legislation. I wanted to tell him he needed to lean heavy on his fellow dems to abide by the Constitution. Now it sounds as if he’s accepted that it’s going to pass and is making a move to limit it’s effect on service members. That’s all fine and dandy, God Bless our service members, but what about the rest of us folks that have decent health insurance. Not only are the health benefits of our military folks threatened, but the very freedoms they have fought for. No one should be forced into abiding by this unconstitutional garbage!

My mom is 82. She depends on "Tricare for Life". Dad died in Dec 2003. I think FReeper LucyT is in a similar situation.

The list of lies grows longer. Where was the media reporting on this? Why hasn't Obama, Pelosi, and Reid been asked about this problem with their helthcare boondoggle?

To send him a response on his site in the House
he requires an address and a ZIP Code. I used his
Blue Springs Office Zip and Found a Pizza House as
an address. All other ZIPs outside his District are invalid.

My dad served from 1951 to 1977. Korea (USS Randolph, USS Iowa), Vietnam(XO - USS Marshall, USS Prairie. CO/XO USS Arlington) along with XO of 32nd St Naval Station, San Diego (1970-1977). He was also the project officer for the patrol gunboat hydrofoil program (PGH1/PGH2) at the Pentagon. He took a reduced pay check all those years to ensure my mom had the survivor benefit when he died. He's not here to go apes**t. I recall a week when we received calls from U.S. Senators pleading for my dad to sign off on some crappy project. Dad inspected the contractor's work. They literally had 55 gallon drums on the deck to get it to float in a level attitude at the pier. That cost him a promotion to Captain. He was philosophical about it. He said it was OK to retire as a Commander. If he had made Captain, there was always the chance some wise guy would ask Army or Air Force.

So TCFL increase will start Oct 1, 2010? Right now TCFL cost zero for me and my wife since I'm retired and I am her sponsor. Also, Express Scripts which is the TC pharmacy part allows us to get RXs from $3 to no higher than $22 by in network pharmacies or mail order with no premium. TCFL also pays my Medicare deductible as well as my wife's. The only thing we have to pay is the Medicare premium for part B which is deducted from our Social Security income.

So effective Oct 1, 2010 my cost for TCFL will jump from zero to $2,888/year for me and $2,888/year for wife or cost close to $6000. I haven't seen the numbers that will come out of our Express Scripts yet. Will be lucky if ES is still in business when all this hits the fans.

And the One says it will only be a tiny increase?

Should have added...

Under the Senate bill, TFL would not cover any of the first $525 of an enrollee’s cost-sharing liabilities for calendar year 2011 and would limit coverage to 50 percent of the next $4,725 in Medicare cost sharing that the beneficiary incurred. (Because all further cost sharing would be covered by TFL, enrollees could not pay more than $2,888 in cost sharing in that year.)

So that brings it up to around $10K/year for wife and me from what used to be zero for all those who served their full retirement or were 30% or more disabled upon service connected retirement discharge.

Those who gave their all have just been tossed in the trash can.

And what about those Veterans who are permanently and totally disabled and get their care through the VA? Do they who have have to pay the “surcharge”?

The content of any final bill is irrelevant! Any federal version of health care is unconstitutional since Article 1 Section 8 does not specifically grant Congress the power to regulate health care! The people are not bound to comply with any unconstitutional act of Congress! This is the point people need to hammer home with their Congress critters!
